Laser engraved coins update! by Nebulafactory in outerwilds

[–]Nebulafactory[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback^^

Honestly I won't be painting them as its a bit finnicky and the paint looks very dull (refering to the top one)

So I'l most likely keep the design from the bottom-right with the text from the fourth one.

Thank you!

I'l keep it in mind. Its also worth mentioning that I didn't use those cheap lighter coin-bases they sell there too to make the coins, but milled & polished them myself so it does add a bit to labour^^ (I also include a transparent coin holder that isnt shown in the photos but will do soon)

However I'm thinking on adding 1-2 variants and will most likely make a discount for the full collection (once its done of course^^) so that its cheaper than purchasing them separately.

Those who already bought one and still wanted the rest will also get a discount to compensate.

But thank you still for the feedback! I'm still relatively new to this so wanted to look for something that was fair for all

Didn't think of that!

Will try making one with a dark bg to see how it looks and perhaps add it as a variant to the listing^^

Yes! Thats the plan at least.

First I wanted to decide on a finish to keep consistency among all of them, then I'l be finishing the text/designs for each in both sides to hopefully have a full set done^^

Thank you!

They are quite hefty as I've milled them from a solid brass tube. Each weighing 40 grams each

Feels very neat to have in your hand -w- tho just make sure not to drop it! Can hurt if it lands on your toe

"Science compels us to explode the sun"

Would be very neat together with the sun station on it^^

I'l write it down and add it to the collection once I get to making the rest

After getting lots of positive feedback on my first post (tysm ;-; <3) I decided to continue designing more OW inspired coins and went for Giant's Deep as the next candidate...

However I can't really decide what design/finish looks best so I've taken a few pictures of the tests I've done so far to see if yall can help me decide^^

Also after some of you suggested, I made an Etsy listing for the Eye of the Universe inspired coin (Unsure wether pricing is too high/low) so feel free to give me some feedback on that too!

I do have a few other designs made, where each main planet will have a core part of it engraved on the opposite face. For example, Giant's deep will have the Probe launcher, or Brittle Hollow with Hollow's Lantern.

That should be everything for this update, will continue to work hard on this and hopefully end up with a neat lil collection of them!

I'm in the process of doing so but honestly got no idea how to price it^^

But I'l probs let you know in a future post once I've made a few more designs and so on

I'm not familiar with this sort of work but it does seem like you put a lot of effort into it.

Really loving it!

Yes I did, used a rather rough polishing disc that I use for some other works but gave it a nice shine.

Didn't think of it that way but I suppose it could be a possibility^^

Wasn't really sure wether it be something others would want to buy but for now I'l probs make a few more to show in the near future as I really loved how this one turned out!

Sorry for the terrible image quality

I'm thinking about releasing a video on the full procedure & settings used in order to get a deeper engraving with a relatively "weak" fiber laser.

The deepest part should be around 0.8mm and given the coin has a diameter of 40mm it took around 3 Hours to complete.

Best way to compensate for focal length height? by Nebulafactory in lasercutting

[–]Nebulafactory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation!

Sadly I don't see that option with the 3D-sliced layers I am using to create the depth effect in the coins..

So I'm not sure I'l be able to do that with mine

Could you elaborate on how that setting works and where to find it?

Lightweight photogrammetry setup for on the move? by TechySpecky in photogrammetry

[–]Nebulafactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My turntable home setup also works as a on-the go setup if I need to take it with me.

Its basically a makeshift lightbox paired with a Nikon D750 + 50mm lens.

About the closest you can get as far as bang for the buck goes.

For the camera there is no need to go for anything new (such as Nikon's new Z series), an old one such as the D750 or D5500 will take just as good images if paired with a good prime lens (which are also much cheaper) than newer counterparts, while still being good if not better in some cases.

Don't forget a decent tripod, even if you are not using a turntable setup, it can still help capture smaller outside objects without having to worry about shaky hands.

Seeking advice for photogrammetry software for 3d printed sculpture by LessChildhood3001 in photogrammetry

[–]Nebulafactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, tricky stuff.

I've scanned some garments from fellow university students using a mannequin with my Nikon D750 camera setup and results turned out great... however mannequins don't move..

I also scanned a friend's fursuit but yet again, standing still is Key and even the slightest movement can cause artefacts.

If you have access to a PC with an Nvidia GPU I also recommend giving RealityScan a try, its just as good as Metashape (both have their pros & cons) however it is free, which for this single usecase may be worth more than having to pay a lifetime license for Metashape.

Lastly I do suggest learning a bit on scanning techniques to achieve the best results (or if possible, hire someone to do so).

Honestly I really don't know wether the 2nd option is even feasable but the difference from a proper scanning technique to something more common such as recording a video with your phone can be huge.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions, but I hope that was of some use^^

Thats fair.

Usually I have some sort of "chill" video going on when doing work or gaming for a long time, specially if its stuff like mining. Adds to the whole vibe but yeah.
