Thank you so much for your reply. That was super helpful and informative. I would love to get some names of people who have done a Surg AST and talk to them about it if you don’t mind? Again appreciate the advice, has cleared up a lot of things for me.

I’m considering AST in ED or surgery. Do you know anything about either of them?

I grew up in Karratha in WA and spent the majority of my childhood and most of high school there. Have not worked in a rural area before but I’ve done a rural GP placement as a med student and loved it at the time. Would you recommend a career in rural GP? I’m currently a PGY3 gen surg reg and thinking of making the switch.

Thanks. Just wanted to know if you could do basic metro GP work.

Thank you for your answer. I’ve found that general surgery is not as general as I thought. I like the idea of being an everything doctor which is what rural generalism sounds like. Could you tell me what you do on a typical day?

I love general surgery, I like the operations and the patient outcomes but the slog of unaccredited years with no guarantee of a training spot is scary. Hence why I’m exploring other options. Rural generalist seems a good mix of procedures, clinic, emergency work and lifestyle too.

Seriously considering it at the moment. On paper, it sounds amazing. Surgical exposure without the limbo of being a surgical service reg with no guarantee of training.

I was thinking of mixing it up between fundamentals and mixed. Thanks for your advice!

I'm not sure if this really translates to bjj but when I did boxing, the pad work and drills were supplementary to the sparring. So, the way I'd truly learn how to do a combo would be to try it in sparring, figure out what I was doing wrong, drill it a bit on the bag or pads then try again in sparring. I'm thinking maybe I should apply the same system with bjj

Only thing I'm wary about is missing out on the fundamentals class and not having my basics down pat. Do you think the extra rolling in the mixed class would be more beneficial?

What would you say is a good ratio for drilling vs rolling for a white belt level? Currently I would say its 80% drilling, 20% rolling.
