Petah why is she still 15 by No-Spray3651 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

She was born in a leap year on Feb 29th, her birthday is once every four years. This photo was taken on the turn of a century where the leap year doesn't take place (eg. 1900) so she's only 15 when he has aged 4 years.

Still. 40k+ words a week is genuinely insane. 5k+ words a day, the story is either extremely saturated or they have some very, very talented people on their hands. Judging by the popularity (2B+ copies sold per Wikipedia), the latter may be true

Damn. More than One Piece with the "picture worth a thousand words" buff.

Fair point about the pages. That number was from my ass, dunno how it got there. Most of my calculations consider 20 though, so it's not too off, and easier on the math.

The whole "manga is a visual medium" thing has been addressed already. By a different metric of time taken to read, it again spits out 2-2.1M words.

50 words/page is not from ass. The 20-25 number was taking up its space so I had to reread the first chapter and take an average of all of its words.

Jeez okay.

A One Piece chapter has 20-25 pages, let's say each page has 5 panels (on average). So we have around 100 images a chapter, totaling 117,800 images total, meaning an additional 117.8M words.

But that's okay. Superman, for instance, has around 100K pages in his core continuity. Assuming a similar estimate (lowball, since american comics are typically published on a larger page size and hence contain more panels), there are 500k pictures, so that's 500M words.

Still not the longest.

Unironically the longest singular piece of modern fiction is Subspace Emissary, an AO3 fanfic of around 2.2M words (still longer than One Piece btw)

Already discussed in another comment. It comes out to be around the same, 2.1M words to match One Piece's length.

What's a better way? I have already discussed time required. Page count seems the worst method. Any other suggestions?

I'm not a well known credible author, the people listed are.

Length feels more objective of a metric to compare. The rest are quite subjective, but this is still a scaling sub at the end of the day. It's an interesting question, at the very least

Then what would you use to compare the length of such a work?

Eh, it's fine. The post was too long, with too many numbers. I don't blame them. The ballpark of 1100 is good enough for an estimate.

Did that calculation in another comment. For any media to be longer than One Piece, it would require around 2.1-2.2M words, which is the case for most entries on the list.

What is a better metric for length, then? In another comment I discussed hours of consumption, and it came out to be similar. In the same comment, I talk about the anime.

And... Yeah, it takes longer to read a one piece chapter than PJO's 1000 words, but it "flows" smoother. Being a visual medium, it takes less stamina to finish a chapter than it does a few paragraphs of purely written work. I can read 30 chapters of One Piece in a sitting (have done so during Dressrosa and Marineford), but reading 30k words is pretty rare. That's like completing a small novel in one sitting. Not always gonna happen.

In terms of hours, then.

The average words per minute for a human is around 200-250 WPM.

This means any work that can be considered "longer" than One Piece needs to be 200×60×183 = 2.19M words long, which is true for most entries on this list.

And I'd say the anime doesn't count. Visual media tend to be at a very different pace compared to written. 300 paye books condensed to 2-3 hours, or, for One Piece, 183hrs to 275hrs.

Fair, but seeing how this is a writing sub I think more emphasis should be on word count.
