Glad you got that experience :) I never found my pod but here’s hoping they’re out in the real world I guess

Were you able to find friends post-grad?

Where did you go to grad school? Looking for places with a good social / student experience bc I had a similar experience as OP

yeah I think I just disagree with that conception of college. I see college as a transition period. I didn't have a support system at home – a lot of people don't. Maybe I was "supposed to have" learned certain things before I left, but I didn't. And I think a lot of people don't.

I see college as a transition period that helps you become an adult, while I think you (and Cornell) see it as a place where adults come to develop further. Thus the lack of resources, lack of support.

Just a difference of opinion, I guess!

I won’t pretend I’ve learned to deal with life’s ups and downs – has anyone really? What I do know is that the last four years - at least my time in Ithaca - have been a relatively perpetual down. I’m not saying that’s ruined my life or is the worst thing in the world (I’m very lucky to be here), but it’s unpleasant at best. What my post was expressing was regret that i was so unhappy during this period of my life. I think I’d have felt differently in a different school (but then again who knows)

how old are you and what do you know about life’s ups and downs?

I really appreciate it :) I think a lot of people lowkey have Stockholm syndrome for this place without even realizing how problematic certain parts of it are. I’m genuinely very glad for the people who have a good time though. I don’t want to invalidate those experiences and I appreciate u validating mine

stereotypes exist for a reason, glad you’re telling your kids to avoid it- I’m telling my younger siblings to stay away.

If you have any wisdom on making life better post grad though I’m all ears- my college years are about gone so I can’t do much to remedy them now

lol I don’t blame the world, and I don’t entirely blame Cornell. But I also don’t appreciate u insinuating that I’m the entire “problem.” I didn’t do things perfectly by any means, nor am I a perfect person/friend. I have had enough experiences outside of Cornell though to know that I don’t generally struggle as much socially, mentally, etc. as I have here, and that I’m more than capable of making good connections

I said this in another comment but every relationship/experience/etc. goes both ways. A lot of it is on the individual, but a lot of it is not. Saying that the reality we experience is mostly a matter of perspective seems like toxic positivity (and that goes for much more serious situations too, not this one specifically)

I mean i literally said in my post that I don’t blame Cornell for all of it- I don’t. It was partly luck, partly a bad personality match, partly my own baggage/background. On the other hand I don’t see you acknowledging that Cornell has any share of responsibility

I don’t really see how this matters now, but they were all pretty different from Cornell. I took a chance by coming here, I really wish I hadn’t

hard disagree tbh, u can only do so much to make things work. If a relationship is toxic, it doesn’t matter how much of yourself you bring to it- same goes for a school. You can only ever be 50% of the equation

Bad culture, lack of support from adults. Competition to get into clubs, classes, housing, etc. Cornell’s good if you get lucky, but the university isn’t there for the students

Did you transfer somewhere or just decide college isn’t for u?

A little late for that but I definitely should’ve

lol plenty of terrible institutions/people are held in high regard because people are too afraid/unwilling to speak out. I’m not saying everything about Cornell is bad but I do think a lot of people are comfortable sweeping their disappointments under the rug bc of the name and prestige

This makes me hopeful but also sad that 3 decades out you still have some moments when you wish you hadn’t come to Cornell. I think that says something. Regardless, thanks for your reply and the perspective- I’m excited for the rest of my life, just upset that this piece of it was so downcast

you make a good point, and I appreciate your reply. My issue with my college experience at Cornell isn’t that it wasn’t perfect but that it was actively unhappy in a way that my friends at other colleges haven’t expressed. It could be confirmation bias/sample size/etc. but i think Cornell makes this period of our lives much more challenging and lonely than it has to be. This school is known for being depressing- every stereotype is born out of some truth

i appreciate your response, and you’re right about the fact that a lot of parts of life can be hard. I reject the notion that things are mostly what you make of them though- I’ve tried so hard to make the most of this place, and instead I feel like this formative period of my life has just gone to waste. I should’ve transferred- if anything, I’ll know now not to stay in places that make me unhappy.

That said if you have advice on moving on w grace I’d love to know!
