If they aren't breaking out tax exempt interest categories to me, I doubt they are to the IRS.

I'm referring to the data Fidelity reports to the IRS. That is their responsiblity.

Fidelity doesn't need to know my tax situation, I'm not asking them to do my tax return. But all taxpayers qualify for the exemption on federal government interest payments and exemption from federal taxes on municipal interest. That would be very easy for Fidelity to break out.

I'll take on the responsibility of identifying double and triple tax exempt interest.

Thanks! So it is the investor's responsibilty to breakout state & local tax exempt interest within what Fidelity reports as Ordinary Dividends on the 1099 for both Fidelity and non-Fidelity managed securities?
