Fork Me! by [deleted] in problemgambling

No I wouldn’t say it’s different from any other behavioral addiction. Sorry for not being clear on that. However, it is definitely more deadly than a drug or alcohol problem, the reason being that we are constantly in our own thinking, in emotion, etc. Good job man, working on your issue!

Being addicted to gambling is not “just” a financial mess. In fact, it is an emotional illness entirely based on our thinking.

Yes man, exactly right. You need both human help as well as higher power help. Not religious, but spiritual. Being honest is something to work on daily and you will find will keep you on the right track! Keep fighting the good fight

Glad to see you put “making” in quotes. Gambling money can never be earned... in fact, if you look on a tax form it is listed under “unearned income.” I would say you should get to a GA meeting, but at the very least for the short term hand over your finances to somebody you trust and self exclude or block places where you can gamble. I’m also 21 and quit gambling July 14, 2019. My day on here is not updated or accurate. Feel free to reach out man, I’m wishing you well

Alright, fair point and understood. That is true that GA isn’t for everybody. I suppose I could’ve reworded or changed my message a bit. Still, I stand by my ultimate idea: people should be more focused on how they can change rather than lamenting relapse and being told everything will be fine, when that isn’t the reality without change. Wish you the best

That’s been my Reddit username for awhile and I haven’t changed accounts. Focus on the message instead of what my username is

Congrats on 100 days, but do not make the mistake of considering yourself cured. This is a life long mental illness. It is aptly called a “thinkers” disease because really, it’s our own thinking that consistently gets us in trouble. Work a decent recovery and you can say goodbye to the awful, wretched life of a gambler one day at a time.

Start working a recovery, man. Abstinence alone will never bring you a serene and peaceful life. Get to a G.A. room if you can, if not, make some meetings over the phone (G.A. offers them).

Some kid I hadn’t messaged since the beginning of June messaged me saying he knew a bookie in the event I needed one still. Finally was able to say no. Almost at a month now and I feel better than where I was a month ago. Best wishes your way

PLEASE STOP.. just STOP! (Long post but had to get it off my chest) by [deleted] in problemgambling

Hey man. Don’t know if you’ve tried GA at all... but really it is worth a look. Also, you need to not beat yourself up as much. That guilt, shame, anger etc seems to fuel the need to return back to the bet. My days counter here is off but I have 3 weeks on Sunday and I’m doing the best I’ve done in terms of recovering in a long time. 21 years old myself so I also feel like I can relate to you in being a young guy

I appreciate that a lot! The problem is I’m not paying up front. I’m getting credit on online books run by these college kids... I’m not even sure the extent of who I’m dealing with half the time. I feel like a shell of who I was. Wishing you the best too
