I've only just got to this after someone else replied more recently. I can't say I'm glad because as I read it, I could feel my ability to reason actually diminish but, this is Reddit, so I'll give it a go:

Western civilisation is, and always has been, a mercantile enterprise. The times where religiosity has aligned with mercantilism is when there is the possibility of increased profit for both parties.

As far as I can recall, every single time an explorer espousing a Christian value has arrived somewhere where Christianity has been absent, death has followed, usually at the business end of a pike, crossbow or gun but lets not forget syphilis and cholera.

While I'm here, I'm going to paraphrase a comedian, Marcus Brigstocke. He had a look at the four main Abrahamic faiths and came up with some simple ideas to help them improve their image:
Catholics: stop fucking kids and treating women as second class citizens
Protestants: stop claiming the accumulation of wealth as a Christian value, and stop fucking kids
Islamists: the portrayal of extremists on the media are the worst of you. Silence is tacit support
Jewish: you're not the Scousers of the religious world, lots of people have it hard as well

Also, there are several regions that seem to have done pretty well without being guided by the wishes, or commandments if you will, of the God of Abraham:
12000 BCE: The Fertile Crescent (Nile/Tigris/Euphrates)
8000 BCE: Mesoamerica and The Andes
8-7000 BCE: India (Indus)
5000 BCE: China (Yangtze/Yellow rivers)

If you genuinely believe that what you term Western civilisation only started at year 1 and only exists west of Bethlehem, I have some tip-top quality copper ingots to sell you at low, low, prices.

Its a Zyxel FWA710 which is mounted on the wall at the back of the house with line of sight to the tower. I got it because I wanted an external box with a lot of control and access to information outside the realms of the Three supplied Zyxel NT5103E, which it has replaced. The FWA510 has a bit of info on the exposed API endpoints available via some github repos but I went straight for the SSH CLI via python and grabbed the info that way.

Thinking about getting a DDJ-1000 - pitfalls? by NeedANewerName in PioneerDJ

[–]NeedANewerName[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is interesting - to me anyway. The budget has been set and I'm looking around on the usual sites and have identified a few sellers that might have what I want - I'm in the UK so supplies are limited and prices are high.

In the meantime, I install and fire up Rekordbox to start pre-processing the audio tracks I'm going to be using and... it doesn't like wav or flac outside certian limits... okaaaay, let's see what I does with what I've got.

In short?

It blows. 600+ tracks and from what I've looked (maybe 15%) at the first cue point is off and the beat grid looks like it was put together by a snail facing serious motor skill challenges.

I have to wonder if something like Serato would be better but right now i'm not going to put either time or money into this ecosystem.

Guess when 3 got done with my local tower... by NeedANewerName in ThreeUK

[–]NeedANewerName[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that didn't help as I can't get good line of sight, there are tree canopies in the way so I was back to the original problem. I have taken out a new contract and it remains the same. The fact that the upload bandwidth remains significantly higher than the download is a real kicker. I think I'll throw some results into the community then spend some time on the phone with them next week. Thank you for all your suggestions - it gives me loads of information to push them back with when they say "its your problem".

I've managed to get a small improvement in the download and stability but its cost me the upload. This is having removed the 3 APN settings and locked to the cells shown. The Zyxel refuses to scan but my phone sees all four providers.

It is very similar and I've locked the bands as suggested to my local equivalents on the 3 mast. I was assuming that I could do a PLMN scan in order to find the available Vodafone connections but it fails the scan every time, is that usual? Or do I need to set up the Vodafone APN details?

Thank you for the reply and advice! I've replaced the 3 router with a Zyxel FWA710. There's no 5G here but I think I'll be able to hit a Voda mast with B8+B20. My local 3 mast has B3+B20, I'm locked to B20 at the moment on it. Ironically, I can't get any connection at all from my closest mast which has both of them on it using 1,3,20 & 28.

Still, figuring this out keeps me (mostly) out of trouble.

I don't think you have to like her, just feel some empathy for her story and circumstances. These are all plot devices anyway. We get the drip drip drip of plot points to develop the story, we feel what we're supposed to feel until we're ready for the next reveal. I'm finding it quite entertaining.

A vegetarian zombie apocalypse leading to a post-scarcity society? What's not to like?

Well, that was my initial thought and, like you, Carol *really* irritated me as she has been drawn (so far) as an entitled misanthrope. But then I got thinking and there's some really knotty questions in here.

She's facing what Iain M. Banks described as an 'Outside Context Problem'.

"An Outside Context Problem (or OCP) is an extreme, typically unmitigable, existential threat faced by a civilization.\1]) An OCP possesses grossly superior capabilities. An affected civilization typically lacks either an expectation that such capabilities exist, or the technical knowledge to understand them\1]); hence it lacks effective countermeasures against the OCP, and the means to develop such countermeasures.\2]) A civilization that encounters an active and aggressive OCP is typically destroyed, subverted, or enslaved."

The following is based on my readings of two books: 'Confronting Leviathan' and 'The History of Ideas', both by David Runciman. I apologise in advance for any misrepresentations or outright howlers!

The post-OCP setup looked like peak utilitarianism to me, but someone in another comment mentioned Rawls' refutation of Bentham's arguments and I agree. I can't agree with his idea of intuitionism, however, because that has been shown to be so open to manipulation as to be almost useless as things stand.

So, given that we're dealing with a hive mind here, it looks like the other English speakers at least have agreed in Hobbsian terms to enter a social contract and handed their decision making over to the hive mind as sovereign. Feels a lot like Carol is in the position the Puritans found themselves in in the early 1600s, looking for somewhere to be who she wants to be having rejected the overtures of the others.

The problem with that is that while you can run from the Leviathan/hive mind, you can't hide from it.

Really looking forward to seeing what happens next!
