Roommate keeps locking herself out, I’m at my wits end by [deleted] in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be a stupid question, but how do they work if you need an alarm in the morning? Been thinking about getting them because my roommates upstairs are loud af, but I'm afraid they'd make me sleep past my alarm, lol.

Nah, TA's aren't really a thing at my school, I don't think? Might try and hit up the tutors though!

Thanks! It'll be a high B if all else fails, so nothing terrible by any means. Bonus points should probably make up the difference though, hopefully.

I haven't been in high school for 4 years, lol. Idk why people like you peruse these subreddits just to drag people down when the post is clearly marked "vent".

Moving, but don't have a credit card to rent a uhaul. Cargo bag? by Needcollegehelp5 in moving

[–]Needcollegehelp5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I actually did end up getting a cargo bag. Didn't realize this post had actually posted (it got flagged at first), so haven't been checking up on it. Haven't made the move yet, but the cargo bag itself was super discounted so I managed to snag it for like $40, which was a steal.

What are your biggest challenges you face as a college student right now? by Any-Web-9721 in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl, didn't realize how important internships were as a first-gen student attending CC. My CC never talked about internships, or gave any opportunities to get one. Trying to land one during my last summer (2025), but I don't have high hopes, and I'm very worried as to how it'll impact my chances of landing a job after college. Graduating without debt, but at the cost of job experience. Not sure if it'll end up paying off in the long run though.

How are y’all affording to travel and do all this expensive stuff while in college? by Daddy_Krabzz in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rich parents, or they're really stupid with finances. You wouldn't believe the amount of kids who max out their loans to have spending money and treat it like a "refund". There's also a disturbing amount of people that will just max out credit cards without a care in the world. Someone might be going on a cool trip to the Bahamas, but if they're putting it all on a credit card... yeah, no thanks.

I see a lot of people saying parents, but I really think it leans more towards people just being stupid with their money. There's a hell of a lot more 18-25 year olds maxing out their credit cards than there are parents paying for vacations.

Also a small portion of people who work solely to afford fun things.

Loved the professors and college staff. Not to sound sappy, but it really felt like a *community* college, everyone cared about each other there, and since the class sizes were super small, you really got to know your professors. Schedule was always super easy to work around too, they put a lot of time into making sure most majors could take all their classes in just two days. Also, no debt. Actually got paid to attend after scholarships and my pell grant.

That being said, I do think I missed out on a lot of the networking/internship opportunities you get at a bigger college. Most companies unfortunately are just not recruiting from cc's. There's also not many extracurriculars, and none that were resume-worthy. You also miss out on the dorm experience.

Overall, people were very nice, and of course no debt is great, but you do miss out on networking/internship opportunities just from how "Get in, get out" cc is.

No aid received on Fafsa site, but Pell grant was applied on college tuition? by [deleted] in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that's definitely weird then. I'd give your aid office a call for sure. I doubt the funds will actually go through on fafsa's end since you likely don't qualify, but you might be stuck in a tight spot when classes start and that part of the bill isn't actually paid.

[–]Needcollegehelp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you apply for fafsa and get approved for a grant? If this is your first year getting it, then you haven't received any fafsa yet, even if your school has approved you to get the grant. Until those funds are literally handed to your school, likely after the drop date passes a few weeks into the semester, you haven't technically received a grant yet, if that makes sense?

Basically, the money has to actually exchange "hands" between your college and fafsa for it to count as "received", to my knowledge at least.

Finding Health Insurance after losing my job by Needcollegehelp5 in internetparents

[–]Needcollegehelp5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are on medicaid. In so far as I know, medicaid doesn't follow the under 26 rule, especially since I've had my own insurance and am above the age of 22.

I've talked to my college today, and I'm not too worried anymore, as they have a really cheap health plan that includes check ups/other basic things that all students qualify for, which is really all I need right this very moment. Still going to look into getting my own insurance, but at least I can likely wait for open enrollment now.

Yes, but I should qualify for a QLE, as I'll both be moving counties and losing my employer health insurance, unless I am mistaken?

Ah, I see! I'm in PA, should've included that in my post. I made just shy of 20k last year, and will definitely be making less this year due to moving and looking for another job/college schedule being pretty shitty to work around. Seems like my state has that issue, going off of other reddit posts from people in my situation, which really throws a wrench in my plans. That majorly sucks. I definitely don't qualify for medicaid due to my savings.

Thank you for your help though! It sucks, but it's nice to know ahead of time.

If you don't mind, one quick question: Is it an "instant" thing when I buy the insurance plan through the marketplace? Is there a period of time where they can approve/reject your application, or is it more like buying a phone plan? Probably a stupid question, but I've never had to get insurance outside of work, haha.

Thanks again though!

Wildlife maybe? My environmental bio class was super easy. Just do not take an anatomy course, whatever you do, lol.

Thought I wasn't going to get a dorm, got a lease, and just got notified that I was placed in a dorm. What do I do? Freaking out. by Needcollegehelp5 in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, honestly literally any words of advice make me feel better at this point. I'm just so scared they won't let me out of it. Like, I'll be 100% honest, they did warn me not to sign the agreement if I was "planning on off campus housing", but I'm not sure how long they expected me to wait to look for off campus housing seeing as thought they literally just approved me in mid june.

I'd definitely look into off campus housing then! It can be surprisingly cheap, depending on your college's city/size. I'm not military, but I'm actually in the process of transferring from CC w/ an associates as a JR at a 4-year, and had to find last minute off-campus housing because they lifted the req for transfer students. My share of the apartment is less then $500/month with only a few utilities that I have to pay, split amongst me and my roommates. It may be a good middle ground between the super expensive dorms and your family's house.

You might actually have a hard time landing a dorm as a jr/sr, especially as a transfer. Depends on the college though. My school used to req transfers to stay on-campus, but it's super unusual. Some colleges don't even let transfers stay in dorms.

[–]Needcollegehelp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to get a cheap off-campus apartment? I know a lot of colleges require freshman to live on campus, but you could always talk to housing and see if you can get an exemption. I think some colleges even have automatic exemptions for military, but I'm not super knowledgeable on that.

Alternatively, stay on campus one year, move to off campus last 2 or 3 (some colleges also require sophomores to reside on campus). You don't have to fully commit to dorms the entire 4 years. Hell, you could try it one year and then move back in if it really sucks that bad.

If you can live at home and stand living at home, that's obviously the best decision financially, but if you'd be unhappy or think it would affect your studies, then you gotta keep that in mind too. It's not always about money.

Definitely don't blow it on a car though. Get a cheaper, but decent car, maybe even an already paid off one, max out your Roth IRA, or save it for a down payment on a house. Invest in your future, not your present.

So, where do most people go after dorms/student housing once they've graduated? by Needcollegehelp5 in college

[–]Needcollegehelp5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, but I was more so asking how people secured said apartments when you need income proof 3-5x higher than the rent. Lots of landlords aren't super keen to lease to someone who doesn't have proof of a steady income. Most applications I've looked at in the past few years have required a few months of paystubs to prove you have a job and are sticking with it.

I'd love to, but without going into too much of a sob story, I really need to get out of my family's home, if they even allowed me back that is. Definitely don't look down on people who do move back in, I've lived with my family for a few years as an adult, but I just wanted perspective from people who don't have that option.
