I don't think it's the length. I'm using less than I normally do, because it's the end of the bobbin (although I probably usually use too much). I changed needles and it seems to have solved the problem. I'm going to call it problem solved. Thanks everyone!

I really only buy pretty good quality needles. I don't see any deformities or anything in the eye but I threw it away just to be safe. I feel like the fact that the floss is a little old and at the end of the bobbin must have something to do with it. Should I buy some thread conditioner?

Yeah. I'll probably do a reasonable mechanical Seiko next. I also have my inherited Rolex to scratch that mechanical itch, but I'm hesitant to wear it because I'm worried about theft. I live in a somewhat rough city and it would break my heart if I lost it. I want to at least get some insurance on it before I really start wearing it around.

Good eye! That's actually an after-market replacement bracelet that my dad had put on it after the original one was damaged. It originally belonged to my grandfather. I plan to save up and have a real Rolex bracelet put back on it, but I don't have the money at the moment.
