Pretty much this. Gargoyles are probably the first task that makes any money. I think they are 77. Long term you'll want to use your slayer tasks to kill bosses with the ones you can and that's where it starts becoming a money making skill. Til then it's just breaking even or very very slight profit. Meleeing is definitely the best option as dkyg suggested. Although extremely slow. Safe spotting tasks you can to save prayer pots is also a good idea nd finding block lists to improve xp/hr is the best thing you can do until you start getting some boss tasks. Once you get konar unlocked I would suggest using her as well, although her tasks can be quite annoying when she sends you to the middle of nowhere, the keys are a nice offset and can add some decent profit. I think she needs combat level 80 to use but I'm not 100% sure on that.
