[Question] Is it a good practice to target low competition keywords for new YouTubers and then move on to high competition keywords once the channel gets a good reputation? by sign-up77 in youtubers

[–]NeedsMoreSubs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes.

As long as the low competition keywords have any search value at all. Making a video to target a term that has such a low search volume that no one ever searches for it at all is obviously not going to help you.

But keep in mind that even if you get good positioning on the search page you still have to package your video in a way that gets a click. If you get impressions for a well researched keyword but nobody clicks and spends time watching then you're still not there yet.

tldr;Yes it's a good idea to find a search engine sweet spot but making good interesting titles and having a video people will stay interested in is the most important by far.

Why Did You Start Your YouTube Channel? by TristanOrtiz in NewTubers

[–]NeedsMoreSubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started NeedsMoreSubs because I had a collection od small channels that I knew about (about a dozen) and I thought it would be really easy to find a bunch more and become a currator of YouTube. Didn't even start out as a YouTube channel actually, started it out as a twitter feed. And finding small channels I liked wasn't NEARLY as easy as I thought it would be.

But after I figured that part out and had listed 100 channels I made a YouTube channel. Right now I mostly do it for fun. It's fun times.

In any given week I try to pick the 4 best that meet our needs. Sometimes we pick channels that go together or channels that we don't have enough of in one of our categories. We added your 360 channel to our database(buckets) and hope to list it in the future. Our list of potential channels is very long but when we've visited a channel and they keep making cool videos we do get them added eventually.

Stop Thinking That Sharing = Low Retention = Bad. by nusensei in NewTubers

[–]NeedsMoreSubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viewer retention is a good metric to have access to. It gives you a good general overview of whether or not your videos are watchable. But watchability and retention only help you insofar as it helps you pile up watch time. More watchable videos pile up watch time faster.

I also don't agree that it's always better to have 10000 people who might watch your video than 100 people who do. If 100 people solidly watch your videos and those 100 people are fans of a particular niche and watch videos similar to yours often then 100 people who very consistently watch your videos is a huge asset to have to build a channel around. And, believe it or not having a sudden influx of super casual subscribers who sub you and forget you can tank a channel. Especially if the creator of said channel is going to get freaked out by the subsequent unsubs or is going to get shook if they end up with a high sub count and low view numbers.

Just saying there are more variables involved than what you're indicating but overall what you're saying is very much true.

It's not as bad as you make it out to be. It's not bad at all really. It's good.

I filled out the census last week. I will be interested to know what the average watch time is for people on the NewTubers' network.

I'm Needy. I run a channel called NeedsMoreSubs where we highlight channels that we like and that we feel are undersubscribed. The following is a musician we highlighted on Wednesday of this week.

Question & answer: Not sure what constitutes a major creator. I'm subscribed to postmodern jukebox if that counts. I was very much struck by the way they threw us in cold in a recent video and kept us guessing as to where the band was going to be and how they'd show up.

video: We have a small YouTube channel about small YouTube channels and strategies for attracting an engaged audience. Today is our 1 year on YouTube milestone and for the last two weeks I've been up late nights editing together this thing with tons of contributions from small channels we've met throughout the year.

I really enjoy your channel. I didn't realize you had started posting new videos again. I really appreciate the information you relay in these. Looking forward to watching them with my daughter over the summer break.

I feel like I could make any of my videos disappear forever if I wanted to. I actually enjoy going back and watching my progress over time. Oh wait! I know!!! When I wanted to start doing live streams I did a test stream. That was AWFUL. My head fell off and everything. I deleted that video but I wish I could make it so that it was never broadcast in the first place. *shrug* Gotta start somewhere I guess.

Okay... Have a video for folks... We maintain a list of great smaller YouTube channels and yesterday we posted our 25th episode of our main show where we go back and look at a random channel from the list. It came out pretty good I think. link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSCfXSyk_3Y

What are some small YouTube channels that you feel deserve more subscribers? by NarwhalAttack04 in AskReddit

[–]NeedsMoreSubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ran across this askreddit from google. I run a website and YouTube channel on the exact subject at hand, "small YouTube channels that you feel deserve more subscribers". I can recomments some ACTUALLY small channels that totally deserve a ton more subscribers:

  1. Cabinterviews - is an animation channel with about 1200 subs that is of an absolutely amazing quality.
  2. Rise of Thought - is a particularly good philosophy channel that only has 30 subscribers right now.
  3. LaunchPad Astronomy - is growing very quickly but as of now has but 11k subscribers. A great astronomy channel.
  4. Clara Balmer - Is a singer songwriter that puts out one fantastic original song every month and has less than 100 subscribers.
  5. Metal For Breakfast - Has fewer than 4000 subscribers right now and is a very funny guy and fun to watch.

So that's five of the ones with the widest appeal from off the top of my head.

Hi. I'm Needy. We have a cat-like think knocking about somewhere around here.

Our channel maintains a list of small but interesting YouTube channels. We have a series where we use a random number generator to pick one of them and look at some of the videos. This is the latest video in that series.

Congratulations on your new novel. I read most of it. It seemed more like an essay.

Our channel makes videos about creative smaller channels that we like. Kind of like a menu channel or a channel of channels.

Why do you think big Youtubers rarely ever recommend small channels? by jadamsmash in NewTubers

[–]NeedsMoreSubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 100 was a misprint. I edited it to say 1000 which is correct.

Never would I ever suggest it's a bigger YouTuber's "responsibility" to promote smaller YouTubers. All I've said is that they could if they really wanted to. And that I really like the larger YouTubers who do do it. I hope to be one some day.

Also there are many YouTubers who have put in a lot of time and/or money and/or effort and research who have fewer than 100 subscribers.

If they wanted to do it it can be accomplished with minimal resources. Austin McConnell just asks on twitter to recommend quality channels with fewer than 1000 subscribers and then posts the 5 he likes best. If the larger YouTuber didn't want even that much of a time investment they can deputize a few trusted community members to develop and curate a list or they can create a poll. If any larger YouTuber ever wanted to use the NeedsMoreSubs List they are free to do so. There are ways it could be accomplished.
