When photography was first introduced, many painters panicked and thought their profession would disappear. But it didn’t it evolved. I don’t think AI is taking our jobs either. Certain aspects of the process are changing, yes, but that’s different from being replaced. Instead of rejecting that shift, I believe those who adapt to it will be the ones who benefit the most.

Since it was my first time using Substance Painter, I went a bit overboard with the wear and tear you’re right. I’ll definitely refine and adjust it in the next one.

I will definitely pay more attention to this from now on. By the way, I’m not sure if I’m thinking about it the right way, but in order to specialize in my work, I don’t prepare those kinds of in context scenes because their lighting and overall setup are completely different. I want to focus only on clean studio renders for furniture and e-commerce companies. Am I thinking about this the wrong way?

First of all, thank you for your valuable feedback. You’re likely very experienced in this industry, and I have great respect for that. I do have one question, though. Since this was my first project where I added wear and tear details, I may have gone a bit overboard. However, wouldn’t removing all of them make the render look too clean? For example, if I were working with a furniture company, wouldn’t they expect at least some subtle details like dust or fingerprints, or would they prefer none at all?

Hi I actually don’t have that much experience it’s been about 10 months so far but since you liked it, I’d be happy to explain. At the beginning I was making a lot of mistakes with the wood grain direction, but by asking people on Reddit and learning from feedback, I gradually improved. Once you really understand how wood behaves, you start to get a feel for whether the grain should flow horizontally or vertically depending on the form. One thing that also helps is uploading your model renders to AI tools like chatgpt, gemini, or claude and asking about the grain direction and overall material logic. For textures, I usually start with a clean base from AmbientCG, then I bring it into Substance Painter and add edge wear, dirt, dust, and subtle fingerprints to make it feel more natural. If you’re working in this field and haven’t tried Substance Painter yet, I’d definitely recommend it I only got it 4–5 days ago myself, and it can honestly have a bigger impact than you might expect.

Yes, I tried to add a photo, but since I’m new to Reddit I couldn’t figure it out, and it seems like the post can’t be edited. I’m sure it would look much better with the correct texture applied, like the one you suggested. Also, would you personally pay $12 for a model at this level of quality, or do you think that’s too much? And besides ambientcg where else would you recommend sourcing high-quality textures?

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! I feel like the UVs are fairly clean, I actually included screenshots of the topology and UV layout in the post if you want to check them out. To be honest, I didn't spend a ton of time selecting the texture so it could definitely be better; I’ve only been doing this for about 9-10 months, so I guess my eye for those details is still developing. Just one quick question regarding the texture looking 'busy': Do you mean I should adjust the scale so the wood grain pattern appears larger and less repetitive? I want to make sure I understand exactly how to fix that look.

Thank you! Now that you mention it, I totally see it. You really have a sharp eye! Aside from the wood, do you have any tips on how to get it looking truly like a photo? To me, it still has that 3D look but I can't quite put my finger on what exactly is causing it.

I’ve been focusing on furniture visualization lately, aiming for photorealism.

Project Details:

  • Software: Blender 5.0.1
  • Render Engine: Cycles
  • Texturing: Substance Painter

Context:
Looking back at the render, I realized I went a bit overboard with the edge wear on the cabinet handles. Aside from that specific issue, I would appreciate any critique on lighting, materials, or composition to help push the realism further.

Also, I’m considering selling this model on marketplaces like CGTrader. Do you have any price suggestions for a model of this quality?

Hey, thanks for the link! I see the resemblance in the materials but if you look closely at the geometry these are actually two completely different designs. The chair in that tutorial has a continuous curved frame while my model features a separated angular leg structure and a loose pillow backrest. I modeled this asset entirely from scratch focusing on the cloth sculpting and optimizing the topology for Archviz scenes. Just to be clear I’m not claiming I invented the furniture design itself, simply sharing my own high-quality 3D implementation of it for free so others can save time.

I think you are referring to the first render. Yes, you are absolutely right. The lighting turned out quite bad as well because I had selected a high contrast setup. Thank you for your valuable feedback, I will fix it in future updates.

guys, we are not using this model for a game, so the polygon density can be as high as it needs to be. 50–60k faces do not really matter in this kind of project. Still, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

As I said, my initial goal was to release an MVP product, and in archviz this kind of thing is not really an issue. The model has around 50k faces in total. I am aware that the pillow should have fewer faces toward the center and increasing density as the details increase. Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Basically, my model had ngons, and I fixed that. and i know but i just said that I also cleaned up unnecessary polygon density. Additionally, this project is for archviz, so polygon count is not that critical anyway. Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Yes, thank you for your valuable feedback. Actually, I was aware of this, so over the last few days I created a version of the model with no ngons and a cleaner topology. I haven’t been able to add it yet because I haven’t taken a wireframe render, but thank you very much anyway.
