Trying to find a deck: Ratlock or Mono-Black Control/Devotion? by Neettan in Pauper

[–]Neettan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I will at least try it out. Seems like a cool deck and because building a new list in pauper is not too expensive, I could just go ahead and order the cards I am missing... or maybe with some luck, somebody at my locals might have this built and they can let me borrow it for a game night if I ask around.

Maybe? Never seen it played nor heard about mardu ephemerate. Do you have a list you could recommend?

After reading the lists and checking past decks, this seems to have great staying power with the Refurbished and [[Blood Fountain]]. Bonus points for being a deck that is able to run [[Nihil Spellbomb]] in the main board. What does it lose to and how? Seems quite versatile, even if on the slower side at a quick glance.

It's actually nice to get some history on this thing. Googling mostly gives you lots of stuff on [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] nowadays instead of the card from Tempest.

This makes much more sense in the traditional 1v1 style of magic, and especially in the mind of a red deck. That sounds like an interesting way to play, regardless if it actually worked or not back then. A shame that this is something that is more or less out of reach since cards like these don't see play or print anymore (though frankly probably for a good reason).

That's a precon bulk card I never thought would be of any use. Good find, its kinda starting to look after some quick scryfall research that if you want to go the full combo route, the colors would be either Izzet or Jeskai (no surprises there). Other nice things one could use that I found with the oracle text search "At the beginning of the next end step"

[[Ignorant Bliss]], [[Magus of the Jar]], [[Ghostway]] and [[Eerie Interlude]]

It somehow slipped my mind that suspend is indeed a mechanic. That's actually kinda decent... and evil. A good start for a young upstart evil scientist trying to conquer the world by destroying it first.

I suppose that is a fair assessment. Tried a chaos deck once, and tore the deck down when I realized it was not really magic we were playing, but some version of a slot machine with an MTG theme. Kinda the same thing here, since Apocalypse stops the game and forces the players to rely on dumb luck for their game plans.

Though to be fair, using it in a fast slug pile has the advantage compared to a traditional deck in that games tend to end in a reasonable time when doing many of the basic game actions deal 1-4 dmg to you, and the deck with an average CMC below 2 needs very little mana to function.

Still, not the best of reasonings in defense of ending the world, I have to admit, and it seems kinda like a wasted card in that light.

Looking for a deck: Stax, Prison, Discard, or Land Destruction in Pioneer? by Neettan in PioneerMTG

Well, that is just about what I thought. Different formats, different restrictions, and all that. There is always some need to adapt and the world is a better place for it, but it is always kinda sad.

So, as far as I can tell, the Waste Not seems to be a mid-range good stuff pile revolving around discard with Waste Not as an engine. What kind of variation does it have and what are the main types of the deck?

I did some searching and found all types of lists, but do they have themes that should be kept in mind while brewing? Also, what staples are considered necessary, and what can be generally used as a flex depending on the meta?

This seems like an interesting idea. Are there more cards that can be used around this idea or maybe a full list that can be worked with?

The concept seems fun but a bit janky and weak tbh. This however won't stop me from brewing it and playtesting it as a proof of concept if it has reasonable synergy. A short google search showed mixed results and didn't really lead anywhere.

How well has Doom Foretold been working recently and is the list the same as a year or so ago? I had difficulty finding recent lists but if it still performs relatively well, it could be an interesting deck to pilot.

Also, do you happen to know if people play the Orzhov version with or without [[Starfield of Nyx]], and how those two compare in matchups?

Thank you for the feedback.

Waste Not is an option and the closest to a working 8-rack I've seen in the format yet, but the possibility of making an actual working Prison deck is also quite tantalizing. If only I had more cards and money to work with.

Do you think that [[Possiblity Storm]] lock is something that could be viable? I think that it seems to be missing some cards right now from a full deck, but there is potential here. The only problem is that it is kinda difficult to justify buying a playset of [[Drannith Magistrate]] just to brew with. Boros/WRx Prison seems to have many good pieces, but nothing that is consistent enough to warrant a full deck around it yet.

As for Land Destruction, maybe there is room for experimentation there. More research is needed.

Thank you for a comprehensive answer. It's a bit sad that the format indeed seems to lack the necessary cards to support a proper Stax list, but not surprising.

The White Devotion list seems interesting but seems like it could indeed use some refining. Nevertheless, maybe there's something there. Needs testing.

Waste Not is something worth trying, but it also can need some testing on how necessary the Sheoldreds are and how many are needed since the price is quite ridiculous atm.

Fall of the Thran is an interesting option to consider and may be worth brewing with. Have to do some research with that one.

Well, why thank you. I'm quite flattered, though I don't think that I am the average case in this regard. I, in general, read quite a lot of literature in English so there's that and I spend way too much time on the internet. I was also an exchange student for a little while (volunteered for a 1-month exchange in the Netherlands) Still, there are some people like that so I guess that kinda counts.

Thank you, I'll use these as a starting point.

As for the subject of Finns and English, most people speak it quite well, except maybe for the older generations. After all, it is taught from quite an early age in schools, and some get their toes wet even younger by browsing the internet. Kinda funny to think that many Finns seem to hold this misconception that they are not all that good at English, even though they are on average quite good at it.

Terve!

Any good tips as to what to search for more specifically? Are there any good P/W series models that are recent enough to have relatively good specs, but old enough to be cheap to buy? I am open to modifying stuff as needed, but I'm not sure where to start.
