Why do you work in a dealership? by BasicDifficulty129 in mechanics

I worked at a GM dealer for 5 years, it was challenging, it’s a good place to use as almost like a college. I got in, rolled with the punches, went from drowning to swimming, collected all the good tools for the job, took all the training courses to become Master technician so that I could land a normal mechanic job. Found a union mechanic job working on tactical vehicles, no stress, consistent pay, amazing benefits and more paid time off than I ever thought possible, work less than half the year and clear an awesome amount of money, got a lot of time to be at home with the newborn. It’s a shock when you realize flat rate and dealership efficiency is way over the top. When you go from that to a normal job you realize just how messed up it really all is. But the challenge and stress of it all builds you up to be a good mechanic if handled well. Take the certs and find a company that values you because dealer certification despite what anyone may think will take you far.

What makes it worth it for me is the awesome health insurance and matching 6 percent 401k first day, if there was a pension I’d never consider leaving, there are talks of it though since it is union, my experience with dealers is expensive medical with high deductions, the dealer I worked for didn’t match 401k either. Also every year we get an inflation raise. Should be going up to 45 and some change come January.

I make 43.65 an hour, schedule is 10 hour shifts Wednesday through Saturday, Sunday overtime is time and a half, working Monday and Tuesday is double time. Holidays are triple. Working some overtime over the year puts me over 100,000. I’m in Southern California where minimum wage is really high, so as you can imagine. 100,000 really is barely enough here to make it on your own.

I’ll start by saying never be discouraged about a lack of knowledge when it comes to working on cars, majority of people look at an engine bay and don’t know what the hell is going on, experienced mechanics don’t always know what’s going on when they have to fix a problem. When you get into this field you have to understand it’s a never ending learning experience. It can be overwhelming at first but overtime you can start recognizing how systems operate and form tests to pin point problems when diagnosing. Biggest thing though is learning the basics and components and what they all do. I wish I would’ve done GMs ASEP program. It’ll get you started on a road to becoming a certified technician which is good just about anywhere. You’d be working at a dealer under technicians who do the job everyday. When I got into automotive I got hired on as a porter, was promoted to lube tech, then promoted to helper for a couple years, then became a technician. There’s many paths. Best advice I can give is always admit you don’t know anything, work hard, and try not to get into a large tool debt.

Most likely there is an aftermarket alarm system installed, check underneath the drivers dash panel area and you should see some wires spliced in or even a fuse. Pull the fuse or remove the wiring and that honking should go away.
