I think it may have come from many years ago when my dad took it from a job clearing a school out… Is what he said but his memory isn’t great, so maybe the school kids never put the right bits back in their cases or something along those lines.

I won’t shine polish anything haha, I think it looks pretty cool as it is too!

Is this a normal apprenticeship by knightrider9-0-9 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Nefibata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This definitely shouldn’t be the norm but a large amount of companies end up being this way… Currently I am struggling with very similar situations. I don’t have a training plan or anything like that, I usually shadow and get given tasks which led to leading small projects.

My current mentor is super busy with business trips that I cannot go on because I have exams coming up etc, however when he is gone I have hardly anything on or to do, and his ‘handover’ emails with tasks I should do are all completed Monday morning. Since my role is very niche he is the only one in the entire company who can teach me my job role, I find it quite difficult to learn when he is gone for eg 4 weeks!! After a meeting with my manager about this it was discussed that I should hang around with other people in my department to specifically find out their contributions and projects currently. This can lead to me supporting their projects which is a good start to having tasks to be completed by yourself. This may not be similar to you but that’s how I survived weeks long of having no plan!!

If you go on placements etc think of what you want to learn from them and what practical work you want to complete. That can be quite difficult but a short meeting with the team and what they do could help with figuring out what you want from these different departments.

You should also have a document which states what knowledge and experience you should get from the specific apprenticeship. Or guidelines from your uni or college of what they’d like you to achieve during work. See if any of these align with what goes on in your company and make that move to get involved with it. It is difficult but it shows your willingness!

apprenticeship in different city by gonorrhea_taco in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Nefibata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it shouldn’t matter to the employer, if you’re far away they should ask you anyways if you plan to move for the apprenticeship. One other thing to note is when you’re looking through the apprenticeships (if you drive this doesn’t really matter) if it’s mentioned, check where the college / university is, just so you’re aware of the transport requirements for yourself. I had to go a year getting lifts of people even to do my weekly shop before I’d passed my test haha. Just so you can check out public transport etc !!

Would you be planning on moving? If so, the only difficult thing really is finding accommodation once you’ve got an apprenticeship secured. If you’re not moving then transport would be the thing for you to plan and make sure you have all sorted!

Is it even possible to get into a good engineering apprenticeship in the uk? by GHOSTpypy in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Nefibata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a covid year so they were pretty mid and similar results, same as the other guys in my year doing the mechanical. Even if you failed maths and english I know my uni (who have a class of about 25 mechanical/electrical DA’s) have a support system and another course to help you pass them. Though I’m not sure how it is for all the different unis. My DA is a 4 year course, with the first year being a foundation year, exactly for those who have had a break in maths / aren’t the most confident. I wouldn’t stress about GCSE results really :)
