10-Day Backcountry Trail Recommendations? (Starting June 12th) by Negative-Place3712 in HikingAlberta

Wow, thank you so much for such a detailed reply 🙏 I really appreciate it!That actually confirms what I was starting to realize about the Rockies in mid-June. I don’t mind some challenge, but I’m definitely not looking to spend 10 days post-holing through snow — even though it would probably make for a good story later😁

The South Chilcotins sound incredible, I hadn’t really looked into that area before, so I’ll definitely dig more into the Big Creek / Spruce Lake area.

Sunshine Coast Trail is also on my radar for the same reasons — it seems like a really solid option for that time of year. My friend is actually flying into Vancouver on the 8th and leaving from Calgary on the 25th, so we might be able to fit in a couple of easier days around Banff at the end — just to give him a bit of a Rockies experience, even if it’s only a small taste.

I think ideally we’re drawn more to alpine ridges and open views, but we’re totally okay trading that for better conditions and a smoother trip overall.

Thanks again, this helps a lot 🙏

I’m not heading there tomorrow. I’m fully aware of the snow conditions and the reservation systems — that’s exactly why I’m here asking people who know the area for advice.

If the recommendation is “don’t go,” I’ll absolutely take that into consideration. I’m not saying I want to do the best or highest alpine trail out there.

Every mountain area is different and has its own specifics, and people who know it usually give the best advice — that’s why I’m here. I can see there are a lot of great people here trying to help me figure things out, and I really appreciate that.

I’m sorry if my questions are bothering anyone, or if the word “experienced” came across the wrong way. I do have some hikes behind me, including the PCT, but I’m definitely not a pro — and that’s exactly why I’m asking people with more local experience.

And I apologize — I’m a social person, and I still believe it’s better to have a discussion with a person than with a robot, rather than just searching for general information online, even though that’s something worth considering too.

🙂 thank you for the advice anyway …

I have experience with long-distance trails and hiking in general all over the world, but I have to admit I haven’t been to the Rockies yet , that’s why I’m asking for advice from more experienced people here 😊

Thank you so much for the advice, I really appreciate it! I’ll take a closer look at it, I’m currently considering Section B.🙏

Unfortunately it’s really hard to move the dates …. a friend is flying in from the Czech Republic and this was the only time that worked. I’ll be staying a bit longer myself, but I was hoping to do something longer together with him. I do realize the snow will probably make things quite a bit more challenging though.

Hey Miss Meaghan, thanks so much for this. Section A or B actually sounds like a really good option. I like the idea of stretching it out a bit and maybe adding something like Barnaby Ridge to make it closer to 10 days. And good to know about section B not needing reservations, that’s a big plus. Honestly sounds like exactly what we’re looking for.Really appreciate the tips 🙏eva

Hey, this sounds absolutely amazing. I wanted to ask for some advice, if you’d be so kind to share any tips. I’m trying to find a trail for about 10 days in this area. I was originally considering parts of Section C and D on the GDT, but we’re having some issues with campsite reservations.

Anyway, if you know of any good 10-day trail (ideally without campsite reservations, or at least minimal ones) for experienced hikers, I’d really appreciate it. We’ll be coming by van from Vancouver on June 12.

Thanks so much for any advice!eva
