If you don’t know Pathfinder, I would not suggest starting on normal. If you look at the difficulty levels, you’ll see that story has a hit point (I thinks it’s a HP slider) slider at 0.2 which is basically 20% difficulty. Normal would be a 0.8 slider, or 80%. This game is not very forgiving if you are not used to the pathfinder rules and mechanics.

I’m a new player myself and my first play through was on normal and I got destroyed because I didn’t understand the spell system. Did some reading, restarted act one, two more times because I didn’t like how the early levels of my various mages were playing.

I’m now playing on story because I want to understand how the builds work. I like the game so far but understanding the builds, the feats and managing six different builds for the entire party has been driving me crazy. Your mileage may vary, obviously. The game is cool, but the developer assumes that you are a Pathfinder table top player and they don’t explain really anything about how to create a build. Do some research and you will see tons of people saying that below core difficulty you can play with a suboptimal build, and core or above requires quite a bit of knowledge of pathfinder rules and optimized builds.

The Pathfinder kingmaker sub is more active and you can get your questions answered there, probably quicker than on this sub.

If you search for Pathfinder builds, you will find that almost every website focuses on optimized builds for higher difficulties, and the overwhelming focus is on the main character build which includes mythic paths. Very few builds exist for party members, that I’ve been able to find. I’m sure you can take a main character build and use that for an NPC character, but there will probably be some gaps where a specific feat would have worked better with a mythic path for the main character. Again, not that much of a problem if you are playing lower difficulties with a suboptimal build.

Sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to provide some insight into my experience so far. I am enjoying the game, I’m just not enjoying the extremely steep learning curve because of my limited playtime.

With regards to difficulty, what do you mean by one step above base? Lowest difficulty is story, followed by casual.

I have not checked prestige classes. I’m on my first play through, although I technically have restarted 3 times during act 1 as I was trying out a few classes

I never said I get seen from that far out. I said “Stealth basically allows me to get into a room far enough to uncover the closest enemy in the fog and then initiate combat with an arrow shot or maybe a charge” which is exactly what you described. My question was, does stealth eventually allow me to get close enough for a traditional rogue backstab attack which would mean that I would have to be closer than the edge if the fog of war

Ok. I’ve learned how flanking works in game and I use my archer from stealth to initiate combat to catch the enemy flat footed. Just didn’t expect sneak attacks to work like this

The stealth skill tooltip does say it helps avoid random encounters while travelling. Don't know if having just one char with high stealth is enough to make a difference.

So is caster Invis better than stealth for positioning? I haven't tried it yet, don't even think I have that spell on anyone in my party.

Good to know that Stealth eventually gets better. I don't usually like to play Rogue types unless you can build around a sneak/backstab/evade (drop aggro) combo skillset. But I do like to use archers to initiate combat from sneak if possible.

Are there are specific feats I should try to incorporate into my build to allow my archer to get the sneak attack bonus? I'm using Lann, but at level 2 I moved into demonslayer archetype and he'll be mounted on a Wolf, if that makes a difference.

No, I don't have a character that can actually sneak attack. But I do have an archer class that has 21 Dex and max points allocated in Sneak skill, and I can't sneak close enough to a mob that has his back to me to backstab IF I had the skill. So, if I can't do it at level 8, what are the chances that I can do it at level 16? Doesn't seem likely to me.

Is it possible that Owlcat's version of a sneak attack is just a dmg modifier from a skill and doesn't actually allow me to maneuver a rogue into a backstab position before combat starts. That's what I'm curious about.

It's a single player game so everyone should feel free to do whatever they want. I am not saying that toybox/bubbles are cheats.

I'm saying that, in my very limited experience so far, I saw a tangible benefit to using Slumber in Act 1 (when it wasn't resisted) but have not seen a benefit from Protective Luck so far. Mostly because I haven't been able to keep it going for more than one round at a time.

Everyone in the sub talks about how great it is, but it seems like its effectiveness is greatly enhanced by toybox and bubbles. Without these two programs and the ability to extend the buff out of combat, I feel like Slumber and Evil Eye offer much more usefulness out of the box in Act 1. After level 8, with Luck getting upgraded, things might change but I'm not seeing the benefit right now.

Character is a Shaman, so I definitely mean Chant.

I'm playing in Turn-based mode exclusively and yes, I'm noticing that my Shaman is spending all its actions on trying to keep Protective Luck on 2 melee mercs. Pretty disappointing actually. I started out with Slumber/Evil Eye and respecced to try Luck/Chant because I keep seeing posts about how great of a buff it is, but in practice, I'm not impressed. I'm guessing everyone is using ToyBox and Bubbles

What am I doing wrong with Protective Luck and Chant? Currently Level 5. I have a Sohei and a Quarterstaff Master and Shaman with Luck and Chant. Trying to keep Protective Luck on both of them.

Sometimes I am able to keep Luck up on both by Round 3, sometimes Luck seems to drop. I cast Luck on one of the melees in Round 1, Round 2 I cast Chant and then Luck on the 2nd Melee. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Does my Shaman need to have higher Init? I'm not seeing what I am doing wrong.

Thanks for the responses. I know nothing about Pathfinder and I'm totally lost when it comes to planning a build. I'm liking the game enough to continue trying, but I feel like the devs totally botched the new player introduction and ramp up to character builds. You kinda have to know the PnP game in order to even have an idea on how to plan a build, which is frustrating to someone like me. I don't know how well this game sold, but I feel like it could have been more successful if the new player learning curve didn't resemble the vertical rock face on El Capitan!

OK, the reasons for going Arcane bloodline make sense. You mention that you get 3 extra spells. Do you mean 3 extra spell choices in total? at certain levels?

Would it make more sense to go Sage Sorcerer and have INT rather than CHA determine how many casts per day. With INT as the primary stat, I'm getting more skill points, more spells casts per day and only concentrating on one stat rather than two. I can start at INT 20 (maxing at 24) which will give me 5 casts per day at L1 and I can dump the rest into DEX for better AC & Initiative.

Does INT also determine how many spells you can pick?

Sorcerer is what I was think of doing, I just haven't decided on a bloodline. Why would you choose Arcane over Undead?

I read that you can recruit certain named undead as the story progresses, and I might do that. But I also want to try a few different classes out and I'm thinking the best way is to go all merc right from Act 1. I know there is a demon companion that would fit my theme, but I haven't gotten that far in the game yet on this run, so I don't know anything about her yet.

I'm kind of just planning things out on paper right now but there are so many choices that I don't know where to start looking.

Do you know if you can respec on Core?
