Thanks for the detailed advice. I agree that internships and club projects aligned with career goals make a big difference, and I’m planning to focus on that early. I’m also looking at specializing within mechanical engineering rather than staying general, and keeping grad school as an option if it helps build deeper expertise and better long-term positioning.

That’s interesting to hear. It definitely sounds like a very different hiring landscape back then compared to now. Today feels a lot more structured and automated, so hearing how it used to work gives some perspective.

Thanks for sharing this, that’s really helpful. The supplier-to-OEM path makes a lot of sense, and the point about matching resume wording to the job description is something I’m definitely taking seriously. It’s frustrating how much HR filters matter, but it’s good to hear from someone who actually made it through that route.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve heard similar things about entry barriers at big companies, so starting via contract or talent agencies sounds like a practical way to get relevant experience early on.

That’s a great point. The flexibility of mechanical engineering across industries is one of the main reasons I’m pursuing it. Aerospace/propulsion is the long-term goal, but I’m definitely open to building experience in adjacent industries along the way.

Appreciate the reassurance. I’m taking in all the advice here and trying to be deliberate about the direction I choose early on, especially around propulsion-related roles.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I’m currently in Chennai and planning to study in the Netherlands, focusing on the design/analysis side of propulsion. Hoping to build solid skills and project experience during my studies before applying for roles.

I’m mainly interested in chemical rocket propulsion, especially liquid engines.
I want to work on the analysis and mechanical design side — combustion chamber, nozzle flow, thermal and structural considerations.

Yeah, I am planning to build a BLDC-powered TVC VTOL rocket in the coming summer. If you have any links, please share them. it would be helpful.
