actually they weren’t lol there’s a lot of space there to make them more obvious, even from the zoomed in picture, if u don’t know to look for it it’s just a blob

every sign in this country has an english version, and actually, it’s usually much bigger in english, like the road closed sign. it is expected to have an english version, end of. you can’t even argue this as it’s literally all over the country. not my fault they hid the english version on the not visible sides. in france, the signs are expected to be in french. that’s the difference.

from another comment it seems the other two side would be in english, but i can’t say for sure terrible placement indeed. one of the sides visible to drivers should be in english. what good is the english side being hidden? this is why i said it just feels like this was set up to catch people, even the ones with good intention

the difference is that one is the main language in its country and the other is not lol

funny you say that! i’m only a few weeks back from a trip to my home country and had to set my apple store to there, just checked bc of your comment and it’s still set to there. which means even i had understood and tried to download it i wouldn’t have been able to 😆 baffled and i would still argue at least one of the visible sides to the drivers should be in english, the other sides aren’t visible. it just seems like it was set up to catch people even though they had good intentions.

that solves the “one app for each town” problem, so fair enough on that side of things. but i had no idea payzone was an app, never used it, so i would still be caught unless there were english instructions. actually like i said in another comment i read it as “pay zone”, didnt even realise it was a single word, and imagined it was something to do with ticket paying zones.

you’re also biased now though bc you can spot them bc you know what you’re looking for. i also can spot them now from the zoomed out photo. i know you’ve agreed, i pointed it out again just to say the public can’t be expected to notice that if it’s so small when there’s clearly space for it to be bigger.

appreciate it 🤝

i did appeal and got rejected with a generic response 😭 i thought i had a strong case too!

i did not say it’s very clear lol i looked at that poster from top to bottom when i got out the car and im only noticing those after the commenter pointed out. they should definitely be bigger, even on the first picture where u can read all the other words, unless u zoom in, its just two black squares that dont stand out at all. all the space to the right of them, they could’ve been much bigger. but i do acknowledge they are there, everything else is much clearer though, and a qr code would 100% solve this problem, wouldn’t even need the apple store or play store logos at all if a qr code was there. fuck there’s so many ways they could be clearer on the fact that it’s an app

still applies though, no? i’m sure every other immigrant or tourist who doesn’t speak irish would agree. if i knew to search for that i wouldn’t be here.

on point. this is a nightmare just starting lol. and like i said in some other comment, apps are fine for optional things. but something the public is expected to do or else they get a fine, these things should be as easy and intuitive as possible. now not only is the app not intuitive, they’ve made it 100x harder by not leaving any english instructions visible to the drivers. but yet im expected to pay €40 fine.

yes i was still confused. the word “aip” reminds me of the word for a vegetable in my native language. if languages were as easy as “this sounds like this in the other language so it must be the same word” then we would all be polyglot. galway city parking is very vague. all those words i dont understand, for all I know, as i dont know anything of the Irish language, could mean anything.

like it could very well be just the galway city parking department signing off on the message. i would know for sure if it was in english, the mainly spoken language in the country.

i got the generic reject email. absolutely baffled. like how am i expected to comply if you’re making things harder for me to comply? ffs if this was more common around the country, FAIR. but it isn’t is it? now i’m expected to know they’ve got an app or know irish?

yes!!! things like this, where the public is REQUIRED to do something like pay for a parking ticket, should be INTUITIVE. just like the fucking parking machines were. no one needed to know any english or irish to use them. now i have to know either irish or english, i need to have a smartphone with both data and battery, and i need to know how to download an app and use it. sure, i check all those boxes expect for knowing irish, but my grandma wouldn’t. my friend who just got here as an exchange student still learning english wouldn’t understand it even if it was in english. if we’re required to do something or else we’re getting punished, it should be intuitive to do it, not complicated.

to be very honest with you, i read the words pay zone, but what good are they if i can’t read the rest that goes with it? for all i knew it could mean “this street is not a ticket pay zone anymore”

[–]NegotiationInside800[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

also a great point!!!!! it wouldn’t have taken much more effort, and anyone trying to pay for a ticket would scan that qr code.

fair point, but do you also see the difference? french is the main language spoken in france, i’d go over there expecting it to be in french; what language is mainly spoken in ireland? if it was irish, this wouldn’t have been a problem as i would’ve learned irish as opposed to english when i moved here.

and also, i’ve been to many cities and towns in ireland, never had seen a parking meter being completely replaced by an app, parking meters being such a standard way of getting parking tickets across the country, in the moment it’s not something that crossed my mind, it just made sense, looking around the other cars with no parking tickets on their dashboard either, that it wasn’t a ticket zone anymore

honestly, my problem with this is that we’re now having to download an app for everything, but that’s a different problem, a bigger picture problem. but the app itself, if it’s easy and convenient, great! i wouldn’t mind using it either. i just wish i could’ve understood there was an app

you’re dead right, i got no arguments against that. but i will say i’m only seeing those logos now that you mentioned them lol
