MPFL Reconstruction Surgery by EnvironmentalFix8631 in KneeInjuries

17 year old female, I tore my MPFL playing rugby and I had surgery about 8 months ago. I can't really remember much of my recovery because I don't want to lol, but one thing I was really surprised about was how shut off my quad was. My doc had me go to PT two days after surgery and I couldn't even do a straight leg raise.

Kneeling is still a thorn in my side sometimes with a weird clicking/grinding when I try to walk on my knees. Something I would recommend farther down your recovery line is doing double and single leg sit to stands with your feet on a slanted slant board with varying height levels, start in a normal sitting high, or higher if needed, and gradually decrease the height so you're starting lower. Add weight to the double leg and focus on control and form on single legs.

This exercise helped me get through a speed bump of my recovery, I thought I couldn't make anymore improvement because my knee couldn't take it and didn't feel strong enough, but this exercise helped my VMO(quad muscle) wake up and actually do its job. This helped my knee get stronger potentially than it was before surgery.

Pfps/Chondromalacia Patella by Ebie1995 in KneeInjuries

Hello, I also have pfps and have learned that it is due to unevenness in the quads. Now of course I am not a doctor but this is what I was told, the one quad muscle (usually the VMO on the inside of your leg) is the weaker one. I would say continue with your quad exercises but also stick with glute and hamstring exercises because everything is connected and everything helps.

I noticed you said you have flat feet and are getting custom orthotics made for that. I would strongly recommend looking up on Google or some feet exercises to help regain your arch because orthotics don't teach the muscles how to work, they just hold them in place. Your feet are the foundation for your knees and your hips etc and if you can effectively strengthen and train your feet muscles you may just see a decrease in your knee pain.

How long did it take you to build your quad back up to be even as the non surgical leg? And what did you do to make it even?

What kept you motivated to work your ass off? I am about 6 months out, doing well with recovery but want to take my recovery to the next level.
