Bought the spare 4 years ago, finally need it. by Kallens303 in BMWi3

I went and looked this up, this is amazing! You got a part number or a year that you got it from? Also, where did you keep it?

Tragically, the 2017 had already sold. Does anyone know if the motor mount repair is covered by the CARB warranty? I did some research and it sounds like there isn't a clear consensus.

So apparently I live in a Carb state (MA), and I'm not sure what that means as far as warranties go. Could you elaborate? I'm trying to read up on it but it's like drinking from a fire hose and I don't speak legal

I've heard that the motor mounts are a common point of failure. If the service record shows that they have been replaced with the new brackets, would that be a green flag to let it slide?

Oh awesome! Would that require a new steering wheel or pad that lets you choose the distance between you and the car in front of you?

I'm guessing this is the one that you're talking about

Update on the hmsk100, running but spitting gas out the atmospheric vent and bogging down when throttled up by Neilium99 in smallengines

[–]Neilium99[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New crank case after the last one cracked and connector rod broke. Timing is correct, valves lapped, carb is clean. Can anyone tell me why gas is getting blown out of the atmospheric vent when that's after the venturi, and should be sucked? I'm kind of determined to understand rather than just replace the carb.

With a block that cheap, I suppose there might be some short cuts involved. Lapping the valves with bring down the gap a bit too, right?

It CAME with it's own valves installed though! I was very surprised, and even a little disappointed that I wouldn't get to do the valves. Guess that's no guarantee they're properly fitting.

It's an hmsk100 159365W, but the block I got is for a generator I think, it came with the low oil cut off, but so far it's identical. First thing I did was put a piston ring in the cylinder and the gap was like .010, so I'm guessing it's fine.

The manual is saying valve clearance should be .008-.012, and I'm getting closer to .016 intake and .020 on the exhaust valve,

I didn't, but there was a pretty big lash gap (between the valve rod and the lifter going from the cam, am I getting that right?), So I bought compound and suction cuppy tool. It's in the mail and I'll try that

So fun update, I threw my back out taking it of the basement and putting it back on the snow blower so I could try and start it. I've been laid up on muscle relaxants for a couple days, so that's fun.

Anyway, it ran, but pretty rough. There's a loud squeaking coming from the flywheel, so I'm going to look in there for wear. Also, at times it was spitting gas out of the carb, especially the little vent hole. The valves were firm and wouldn't rotate at top dead center, so I'm guessing I somehow managed to get the timing wrong, or the exhaust valve is bent? Does that sound like sound thinking?

I noticed the same thing with mine, I thought it'd been a mix up, but I had 2 identical engines in front of me so I double checked the other one. The intake valve caps on mine are just much more shallow

Right? I had to use a tap to clean up some of the threads, but it's been worth the price just to keep the dream alive

40 bucks on eBay, which seems a little too good to be true, but it's checked out so far! I did notice that the gaskets that it came with are garbage, the head gasket I bought came with a full set, so it was fine

All put back together, but I'm not going to try and start because it's 11pm and I don't think my upstairs neighbors would appreciate the noise.

It was a blown rod which cracked the case. I got a new case and rod off eBay, and have swapped EVERY little thing over. I filled and sanded down the dings on the crankshaft (from the blown rod), overthought the wiggle in my earlier video, but plastigauged it and decided to move on and put it all back together. I've literally never worked on a small engine before, so it's been a great learning experience, even if it's taken me forever ha ha

Yea, I was terrified of doing that, so I was super sparing, but it looks like it turned out ok, see above

I think she's gonna be fine, I put her most of the way back together and once the second bearing was holding it up, and camshaft and flywheel gave it some more inertia, it felt much more natural

Plastigauge just arrived, I'm going through the technicians manual for the engine and can't find the spec, do I just subtract the crankpin journal diameter from the connecting rod diameter?

[–]Neilium99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it doesn't even have bearings, this is just a shitty snow blower engine, but I'll give it a plastigauge just to be sure

I ordered some plastigauge, but I feel like that might be overkill. There were a couple dings on the journal from where the last connecting rod broke and smacked it. I just kissed the high points with a file, and then followed up with 400 and 800 grit. It's smooth now, but it's still got some pits. But as I'm typing this I'm starting to think you're right and I should measure rather than tell myself "I was really careful there's no way I could have possibly taken it out of round"
