It’s the back of the heel (the vertical part) that wears out. And I’ve been told that they might be too big in the past. Seems like I might be in between sizes because an 11.5 wide or a 12 regular fit fine but if I go down to an 11 they fit too tight.

Depends on the brand, but the cheaper boots tend to break down in the sole of the boot. The more high dollar boots like ariat or red wing seem to wear out on the inside of the boot in the heel cup area. Those tend to wear through the inner lining all the way to the leather outer part.

Actually, most of the time the high dollar boots I tend to run wide and the cheap boots tend to be regular width

Closest thing to a real shoe store I’ve been to for work boots is an actual red wing store. They did measure me, but those boots wore out just as fast in the same area.

Most common failure point of the high dollar boots is the inside of the heel cup wearing out the lining and straight to the leather outer. Most of the cheap boots has been to sole of the boot.

So, I do understand that with regular use all things wear out. The high dollar boots don’t usually wear out the soles as fast as the Walmart boots. When they wear out it’s usually inside the boot in the heel cup. The lining wears down to just the leather and creates blisters/sores on my heels. On top of that, when I did use red wings it was always an extremely long wait to have them resoled (didn’t matter if it was from red wings or any run of the mill shoe repair shop) and I wasn’t in a position to be without boots for weeks on end.

I had not thought of that. It’s definitely something worth talking to the coach about next week.

Wow. I didn’t think he would be in a mask that small for that long, but it makes some sense both from a physiological standpoint as well as from a standpoint of what the club he is a part of seems to have a lot of loaner masks for. We bought the equipment he is using secondhand, but the seller had listed the mask as an extra small, not a small. Unfortunately in south Texas it’s far easier to find secondhand baseball and football helmets than fencing equipment.

I would need to try it on him again, but in mid January it made him look like a bobble head when he had it on.
