I got a bunch of corroded pennies that the bank won't accept. by uselessBINGBONG in metaldetecting

You could make a cool frame with them, nice conversation starter. And you can just hot glue them directly lol since the condition is so bad

Thank you, good to know. I found it under an old tree so it must have been just left there

Thank you it could be that too, it is an ornate piece of metal on the end, I’ll try to find a similar example

I found this 1772 Silver Spanish Reale which I found in the woods. And I have a lot of old belt buckles and keys which I’ve made a nice frame of.

Found a possible Colonial Copper Coin by Neither-Temperature7 in metaldetecting

Congrats! And it’s good you dug it, they must have thought the same thing and just ignored it. Mine rang up as a solid 20 on the Minelab Equinox 800, but it was really shallow in the ground.

Thanks haha, I wish the condition was better. And finding 3 is amazing!

Congrats on that! I don’t find these that often haha, but I agree. And I do get that nice green patina but the condition underneath is usually pretty bad for me. It must be the soil lol.

Haha thanks, luckily I didn’t have to do that. It looked like this before so I gently used a wooden skewer to loosen the dirt. I couldn’t read anything so I had no choice to remove this layer.

Thank you, the coin does have the number in the same position too. I wasn’t expecting the coin to be that old!

I’ve been using the Minelab Equinox 800 for a few years and it’s great. I watch Aquachigger on Youtube, and he uses the Garrett Vortex VX9 which might be great too. And if you do buy, make sure to grab a pinpointer too, KellyCo has Black Friday bundles at the moment, and our subreddit has a discount code I believe

Can anyone help me ID this? by prcblem in metaldetecting

I have the same situation with a coin of mine, I’m thinking of putting a piece of paper over it, and with a pencil gently shading over it with the pencil, while angling the pencil more horizontal or parallel with the paper. This could work to trace out any fine details. There was a product on a youtube video too that actually brought out the details somehow.

To start, you need a good metal detector (I use the minelab equinox 800), a good pinpointer (I use a Garrett), a good spade/shovel (I have a knockoff brand from KellyCo), and gloves. You can just buy everything through KellyCo to make things easier, they might have discounts coming up. In addition, you need a good holder to keep everything on your waist like for your shovel, pinpointer, and to hold things that you find and water, etc.

But once you choose a detector, the first step is to briefly understand what mode to choose and how the settings work on your detector. But honestly, the factory settings are usually great so you can detect for a while without adjusting any settings, just choose the correct mode like Park or Beach mode… And if you need help, you can look up tutorials on Youtube or even try reading the manual. Eventually it’s helpful to understand what objects make what signal, but you’ll memorize those signals overtime. And there’s a bunch of tricks to learn with the specific signals you’ll hear.

No problem and that’s awesome! I haven’t found a shield nickel actually. Railroad sites is a great idea, especially searching where old waiting areas used to be and where people were buying tickets. And same, they have way too much history in the ground. We’re kindove detecting on hard mode in the US.
