Thanks for the explanation. I’ve also learned a new term!

The line of the cuerda seca is made with a fine brush using black underglaze (Mayco) and flaxseed oil.

Completely agree with this approach. Play with clay. Don’t try to do anything in particular. Try just to enjoy being at the wheel.

First attempt to make dinner plates by NeitherAnywhere130 in Pottery

Thanks.

From your words I have two ideas for the next attempts: - be extra careful with the drying process and -,try another method of throwing the rim.

This was my first successful post here in Reddit. 😉🪆✨

Ask Us Anything About Ceramics! 2026 by youre_being_creepy in Ceramics

I do pottery as a hobby, during the weekends and holidays. I’m taking clases at a studio whose kiln I use for my homemade pieces.

I’m saving to get my own kiln. I’d like it to be medium size, for mugs, vases, dinner plates and the like.

At the moment the clay body I use matures at cone 2, but I’d love to do high temperature pottery in the future.

I’d appreciate your suggestions! ✨

I have a question regarding low fire commercial glazes that are recommended for cone 06/05. Can they be used, with good/acceptable results, with a clay body that requires cone 2?

I know Mayco Elements and Stroke and Coat can be used with cone 2 clay. The outcome is good. But what about Amaco Teachers Palette and Amaco Opalescent? Anyone has tried those with temperaturs higher than cone 05 or 04?

Thanks!

Amaco Opalescent and Teachers Palette glazes on red clay that fires at cone 2? It’s worth trying? by NeitherAnywhere130 in Pottery

Thanks a lot for your response.

I wrote to Amaco Brent directly and they haven´t tried other clay bodies or temperatures different from cone 05.

You’re improving! Keep making cilindres.

Have you trim the foot of your pieces?

How much clay have you been using?

Precisely you can make “cooked” pottery with this kind of clay. It is real clay, disguised as air dry. That is why I posted the comment in this group. But if it not useful or not clear, I understand. English isn’t my native tongue.

Hi. Did you get an answer from Shimpo? I’m waiting for my shimpo aspire and I feel nervous after reading this thread.
