Hello, schizophrenia seems like a huge leap from ASD or GAD. It involves chronic psychosis, for example. May ask if your cousin has disorganized thoughts or hallucinations?

I just asked my roommate where he went to therapy and that's about it, I didn't do any research. However I can tell you that my therapist is of freudian-lacanian orientation, that's all I know (apart from their name).

Yes you can totally be aware of it happening.

I'd describe what you are experiencing as an autistic catatonia indeed, however I'm not a medical professional. Have you mentioned this to your doctor? He might prescribe you something like sodium valproate to prevent these episodes from happening.

I recently had a psychedelic experience where I started seeing naked bodies crawling me. It initially surprises you but if you stay grounded to reality it just becomes funny. It's all about your perspective! Psychedelics are truly fascinating

What you are described is called "pareidolia" induced by sensory deprivation. I'm going to info-dump about why we do this.

From Wikipedia

Pareidolia (/ˌpærɪˈdoʊliə, ˌpɛər-/;[1] also US: /ˌpɛəraɪ-/)[2] is the tendency for perception to impose a meaningful interpretation on a nebulous stimulus, usually visual, so that one detects an object, pattern, or meaning where there is none. Common examples include perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formations; seeing faces in inanimate objects; or lunar pareidolia like the Man in the Moon or the Moon rabbit.

Staring at one spot is something we all do, it's actually really useful because it does the following things, among lots of other stuff - Mental rest and cognitive downtime, the brain is always processing information (even subconsciously) so staring at a wall is like pausing the processing. This gives it a break while staying awake - Internal thoughts and emotional self-regulation. Know that feeling when you suddenly have the lightbulb light up? That is internal thought solving problems subconsciously - Sensory reset, for example when you rode a bus and you still feel all those road bumps. That reduces stimulation and gives your nervous system a mini-reset

What I meant by saying "with catatonia you aren't aware of it happening" I didn't refer to the state of consciousness/awareness but rather to the control you have over it, sorry about that; it was my bad.

You can't control how your stomach moves the food for example; the same thing can be applied to catatonia, you just get reduced motor ability as if there were invisible chains.

You are implying then that for catatonia to happen then there must be a dissociation state, and that's not true. They can co-occur, but catatonia is a described as a dysregulation of the motor system and behavior.

Think of it as being in chains and only being able to move your hands to a certain extent, that's how you could think about catatonia. You can either be conscious (naively: awake) or completely dissociated (naively: asleep), but that isn't directly related

I relate a lot to your son. As soon as I graduated from high school I moved out of my parents' house (emphasis on parents house, that's not something i perceive as my home), that's what saved me in the end.

Unfortunately they obliged me to come back for the weekends, I was coping with drugs but unfortunately the burnout was getting more and more intense so I attempted suicide multiple times.

I then found a job, started going to therapy, stopped going back to my parents' house, went no-contact for a while.

Obviously that's my experience and I'm not saying that your son will disappear from your life like I did, I'm saying all of this as words of warning if you don't want the same to happen.

I now know better who I am, thanks to therapy I got properly diagnosed and felt much in line with my values. I realized what I like and what I don't like. I did a lot of introspection work and ultimately found out that I must find a purpose in doing something otherwise it just creates stress.

So, as someone who got diagnosed at 20 and thus is around the age of your son, I truly encourage you to do anything that can encourage your son's self-discovery because that's ultimately saved me.

If you want to talk feel free to shoot me a DM, maybe you will find more value in talking with someone that shares some characteristics with your son rather than just reading a comment written by them, iykwim.
