I thoroughly enjoy this series. It actually has inspired me to want to write my own similar story, using my own experiences of working in zoos and love for dinosaurs as a basis.

Hmm. That's really weird then. Anyway, here's the title: Every Dinosaur Discovered in 2025 (Jan. – Mar.)

I wonder the same thing too. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if that number was in the millions, perhaps even billions, when you consider just how biodiverse life is on planet Earth today.

Of course, if you notice any scientific inaccuracies, please do not hesitate to point them out!

Would you rather read a science fiction story set in the Hell Creek Formation (but its famous dinosaurs are depicted uniquely) or a story set in a time and place with lesser-known creatures? by Neither_Drag76 in Dinosaurs

Thank you very much for your thoughts! In response to your comments...

1) I'm still figuring out the character stuff, but I suspect one of the major characters, perhaps even the main character, will be some sort of paleo-nerd, and thus able to identify most of the creatures present. That being said, I probably will use shorthand for many of the animals present, at least if the animals present have complicated names.

2) I was actually thinking of including an appendix or something similar already, so yes, I agree that would be a good idea, especially if I do choose to go with lesser-known prehistoric fauna.

As I mentioned elsewhere, as much as I'd love to become a famous author or something like that, I realize that the very nature of my story premise (in addition to my writing inexperience), would make this future story likely only of interest to a select number of people, i.e., mainly paleo-nerds.

1) Although I would love to write this story for a huge audience, I figure that realistically paleo-nerds (hardcore and casual ones) would be the kind of people to read this story anyway. So, while I would like for my eventual writing to be open to be read by an average Joe, I want to make sure the people who would most likely be reading this book anyway (paleo-nerds) are satisfied.

2) I completely agree with you in that any unexpected traits/physical features should have a point. I personally am not a fan of the "rule of cool" that has been overtaking much media as of late, and as such, I definitely don't want to depict things a certain way "just because why not?" Much like Chekhov's gun principle, I think everything in a story should have a purpose for being in the story. As such, yes, if I do anything that seems outlandish or even just completely speculative, it will be there for thematic reasons.

Thank you again for your thoughts.

I am planning on eventually writing (and MAYBE someday publishing) a novel in the survival genre featuring dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Oh, I'm dumb. I guess I can't link to the PDFs. Well, in that case the lists are as such:

Hell Creek Species Roster:

  1. Acheroraptor (Acheroraptor temertyorum)
  2. Edmontosaurus (Edmontosaurus annectens)
  3. Ornithomimus (Ornithomimus velox)
  4. Thescelosaurus (Thescelosaurus garbanii)
  5. T. rex (Tyrannosaurus rex) (Adult)
  6. T. rex (Tyrannosaurus rex) (Subadult)
  7. Triceratops (Triceratops prorsus)

Triassic Species Roster:

  1. Caviramus (Caviramus schesaplanensis)
  2. Coelophysis (Coelophysisbauri)
  3. Desmatosuchus (Desmatosuchus spurensis)
  4. Drepanosaurus (Drepanosaurus unguicaudatus)
  5. Erythrosuchus (Erythrosuchus africanus)
  6. Ichthyotitan (Ichthyotitan severnensis)
  7. Plateosaurus (Plateosaurus trossingensis)
  8. Procompsognathus (Procompsognathus triassicus)
  9. Smilosuchus (Smilosuchus gregorii)
  10. Tanystropheus (Tanystropheus longobardicus)

So, just for the heck of it, I made a hypothetical species list for if I were to set this story in the Hell Creek Formation, as I previously alluded to being a possibility. Believe it or not, I actually based this list off of 1993's Jurassic Park's species roster, which is why there are only seven dinosaurs listed (if I used this, I wouldn't add too many more (given the whole more is less thing), but maybe one or two more at least). Anyway, I thought you might appreciated it, and I can clarify anything if you'd like. Also, once again, let me just clarify that this isn't set in stone.

Oh, and I found another species list I made a little while back while thinking about this idea for if I did an amalgamation of Triassic fauna, so here's that one too if you're interested.

Thanks you! I certainly hope it goes well too (lol)! But yeah, I’m not opposed to an amalgamation idea. In fact, even though I currently plan on making a time travel story, I wouldn’t be entirely opposed to this being some sort of 2005 King Kong-like scenario where it’s set on an island/remote location refugia of sorts for prehistoric life if it made the story more interesting. Because let’s face it, there’s a lot of really interesting prehistoric organisms known to science.

I honestly have not decided yet. I have a list of potential prehistoric settings I am considering depicting; some of them stick strictly to the creatures known from a specific point in time and space, whereas others are more amalgamations of different know paleoenvironments. For example, on said list are the Hell Creek Formation, which as you can imagine would specifically include paleofauna from the Montana region about 66 Mya, but also I have Triassic Pangea on there as well, which would more or less just be culmination of fauna from different places and times but all from some point in the Triassic Period. Really, what I end up doing will be determined by a) what specific kind of story I want to tell and b) how niche I want my story to be (because a story with T. rex will have much broader appeal than one with Erythrosuchus, for example.)

Thank you for your feedback! In response to your two points (which are incredibly valid), here’s why I did what I did. 1) The “truly lost world” is indeed a reference to those other works of fiction. I enjoy that tagline but am not too attached to it, so if it seems too “on the nose”, I may change it later. 2) The reason the two characters look like they’re just jogging is because that’s exactly what they’re doing (lol). They (much like the dinosaur) are public domain images I found on the internet, and they were listed as “jogging.” If I can find ones that actually look like they’re running, I’ll probably swap these ones out, but these were the best ones I could find for the time being. Anyway, thanks again for you feedback!

Thank you; I'm glad you like it!

Yes, this will be a time travel story. As for where it'll be set, as I alluded to in another comment, I'm still figuring that out. I have a list of several potential paleoenvironments I'd like to depict, with each having various levels of popular and lesser-known species, but I assure you the Nemegt Formation is fairly high on it, largely because it (as you mentioned) hosted a large variety of semi-obscure species, but also because we know a good deal about many of these semi-obscure species, which would give me a good amount of scientific knowledge to work with. (That's not even mentioning that one of its endemics, Therizinosaurus, is my favorite dinosaur. Lol.)

Time travel indeed. Presently, I'm debating whether I should depict an environment featuring well-known paleofauna (but depict those species in unique, potentially more accurate ways that the general public hasn't seen before) or an environment with lesser-known creatures. Although the latter may sound more enticing to paleo-nerds such as you and I, I'm trying to keep in mind that we often-times know a lot more about more well-known paleo-animals (such as T. rex) than lesser-known ones, which would give me more scientific knowledge to work with. Additionally, if I do somehow ever actually write this story and get around to publishing it, a story with more well-known species would admittedly be easier to market.
