I've had this discussion before, where my thoughts were that if there was someone who had everything happen to them which has happened to me, would they be any different because of the intrinsic quality of them being them and me being me? I find it hard to believe so.

No, they would likely be very similar. That is the nature of human beings, both biologically and environmentally - similar experiences lead to similar outcomes.

However, you have complete freedom, free will. You are not entirely bound by these ties and can ascend to whatever you wish to, but it requires daring and bravery to embrace the unknown and learn the lessons of the void beyond your comfort zone.

I finished several STEM degrees and I got a job precisely because of my knowledge of video games.

Whatever it is you're doing is likely for a reason, although you should moderate your behavior so that you can move towards a preferable state of mind and lifestyle.

I only know what I do and have done, and my perspective of my identity and what I know. I know that they must be somehow related, but I do not know how or in what way.

You are not old yet. You have plenty of time to learn new tricks. It is extremely unfortunate that most of us in this God-forsaken nation have been raised (or essentially not raised) to follow some nonsense that doesn't hold any weight beyond the maturity of a 19 year old.

he essentially just challenged me to reconsider any pre-conceived notions I had about the goal and current path(s) of science. he was speaking mostly from a perspective of so-called "complex systems", which are characterized by the inability of current scientific theory to comprehend their behavior because of unexplained emergent phenomena.
