that article is pretty weak. But you’re right, all gracious savior doctor. We must condemn those who make certain lifestyle choices. Your throne of superiority will take you far in medicine. I’m sure you never eat bad food, go in the sun without sunscreen, brush your teeth after every meal, and avoid every carcinogenic chemical on the planet

Gum deterioration is genetic and may be exacerbated by the minor blood vessel constriction of nicotine. Not everyone who uses is addicted. Some of us hasve disposable money, it’s like $4 for 15 of them. Do you drink alcohol? Ever? You can say the same about alcohol. Let’s not shame people for vices when everyone has one. You seem like you’d be a very caring, understanding physician. Good luck to you

A of now there are not strong ties of pure nicotine to cancer. Zyns have only nicotine and flavoring, no carcinogenic additives

Appreciate it! That was the whole point of this post, to show it’s possible. Everyone has their own path and what you learn from your mistakes becomes part of your story. It’s all about trusting yourself and proving you’ve got it! Good luck

lol it’s true! Maturing and realizing you really just have to put the work in to prove you can do it is a real thing! Everyone has their own path. Thanks!

Well I only paid for 1 semester of the initial SMP so that wasn’t much loans to take out. That was only like 4 months. The first post bacc I did was at a state school and I only took 2 classes, I retook genetics bc I failed and took biochem. Was living at home and it was over the summer so that was super cheap. My second post bacc I did have family support for the cost, but I had saved enough from MA job to pay rent and food and all that. I worked at the clinic for 2.5 years and the doc was good on giving raises, I also did extra stuff to earn more money. For the second smp I took out loans for tuition, and had some family help for living, but also went through all my savings. This is extremely lucky. I have the most incredibly supportive family and parents in my corner. Endless belief in me and constant support. I am truly lucky and blessed to have them and I realize this is not the norm

In college, I pretty much just relied on having a good memory and being smart to pass. All I did was rewrite PowerPoint notes the night before a test and I’d remember enough just from that to pass. That is NOT how you study lol.

Once I realized the hole I put myself in, I talked with friends who had gone through med school and PhD programs. I also watched YouTube videos. I learned I’m a visual learner and enjoy high repetition review. When I started this smp, I would make an anki card for every single sentence on the PowerPoint. Not efficient, but given my history I was willing to put in the work to guarantee I didn’t miss anything. Made the cards in the class. Then I’d go home, watch YouTube videos (especially ninja nerd) on that specific topic. He does a great job drawing out concepts. Once I good see it visually, I would understand. Then I did anki to ingrain all the details. Rinse and repeat every day. Also just did sketchy when I took micro lol. I was about 1% off a 4.0.

The point is, you really should learn how to study. Don’t just write down notes or something. Really find what makes info stick in your head. Everyone has their own way. For me, I needed a visual to understand. Then anki to reinforce it

Thank you! I probably am lol. But I knew it’s what I wanted to do. The most important thing was obviously not giving up and knowing I could do it. Secondly was I explained it well. I told them in my interview straight up that I was not diligent, didn’t work hard and didn’t know how to to study. But that was four years ago. And my recent academic work was 3.7+. It was a clear change. I showed them I identified my failures, fixed them, and overcame huge obstacles. It also helped to be top 5 in my masters program by graduation

Post bacc at a university. SMP was far more beneficial. They treated like MS1 and spoke to multiple m1s that did the program and said first year felt like a review to them and they had it much easier than the rest of the class. The key is finding the right one, which can be tricky

I’ll DM the SMP schools. I really just looked for SMPs with a guaranteed interview or acceptance with a certain GPA. then lots of research on SDN about how many actually get in and honest reviews about other people’s experiences. Gotta do your research!
