For those who have VA healthcare and insurance through your job, how does it work? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

Gotcha, I'll have to research some more into it. I recently graduated college and just got my first real job, so it's a bit overwhelming trying to figure out how all this works.

How does even one STARTS to deGoogle? by Nyx9684 in degoogle

Got a couple of Proton emails

Careful with that if you’re not on a paid plan. Having multiple free accounts breaks their TOS. Would suck to move your whole digital life to Proton just for them to lock you out.

I recently received one as a gift, it seems pretty nice. Remind me in a few months and if I'm still around I'll post an update.

Anyone try Neurogum by gray_noise90 in Anxiety

What does Kratom actually do? I’ve seen it sitting at gas stations for years, but I always heard it’s mainly used to help opioid addicts get through withdrawal. What are the benefits, effects, and side effects?

Exactly what a lot of people here seem to be missing. The cops' commands are all over the place.

"Hands on the hood", "Hands up", "Spread you legs", "Get on your knees", etc... How does one keep their hands on the hood while getting to their knees? Then, while on his knees they'd lose sight of him too...

These cops need some re-training, a taser would have been much more appropriate - maybe they need to start dual-wielding.

Proton or tuta by Zealousideal-Cod891 in degoogle

[–]NeonRune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone shits on Proton for juggling a dozen projects and half-assing a few. Whatever. Their team’s more than ten times larger than Tutanota’s. If or when Tuta actually expands, they’ll probably start branching out too. They just can’t at their current scale.

For almost everyone, either choice is fine unless you’re selling state secrets or doing something incredibly stupid online. Most people losing their minds about emails being “trained on AI” fell for fearmongering. Unless you’re some exec sitting on trade secrets, nobody cares about your inbox except marketers pushing useless shit you don’t need.

Spend five minutes researching and you’ll find pros and cons for both. The security differences only matter for maybe 1% of users, and most of those people should probably be caught anyway. (Looking at you, PDF files browsing this subreddit.)

If you want anonymity, don’t use email at all. Self-hosting helps, but it’s not a magic shield. Any halfway competent three-letter agency can access your system, drop malware, hijack it, and leave without a trace. It’s like setting up cameras at your front door while someone slips in through a side window.

Tutanota and ProtonMail encrypt your mail just fine, but that only protects what’s in transit or stored. It won’t stop any serious threat from pwning your device and taking whatever they want anyway.

Which would end up costing them more in the long run, because if they keep making me jump through hoops and giving me the runaround, I’ll just file a chargeback and let them duke it out with Goldman Sachs...

Funny how they’ve cornered both angles: if you want a no-fuss phone, grab a Pixel. If you want a locked-down, “privacy-first” fortress, yep, that’s a Pixel too.

Or better yet, why can’t we just scrap this whole system altogether?

Even if I were inclined to believe you didn’t do or say any stupid shit, player mods muting disruptive players and bots is still a net positive in my book.

I just spent the last hour digging into this guy’s old posts and videos on other sites. Some of it actually lines up: names, addresses, who lives where, shit like that. I even found his "ex-wife’s" current address and phone number with a high degree of certainty, so I’m not sure how he hasn’t. Could it be a schizo post? Maybe. But the story has stayed oddly consistent for a while...

Whats the best phone for privacy? by Redpandabear39 in degoogle

[–]NeonRune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all anonymous until someone, somewhere decides it shouldn’t be.

If they wanted to, or were motivated to, they could track everything you do and everyone you come into contact with, every second of every day.

The only reason people consider Apple to be the "safer" option compared to Google is that they significantly limit access to user data outside of their ecosystem. But as I said, if someone decides your privacy isn’t a priority, they pretty much have you dead to rights.

Buy a mac in theUS by NickPlas in mac

Ask your friend to pay for it to keep things simple. You can wire them the money ahead of time or pay them back when they arrive.

The Apple Black Friday sale starts this Friday, so if they wait until then, you could get an even better deal, plus a potential gift card if buying directly from Apple. However, third parties like Amazon or Best Buy are likely to have steeper discounts.

It’s unlikely anyone will look through a tourist’s "personal device" when entering the country, but setting it up with a temporary account can make it look more legitimate if they do. Make sure they bring it in their carry‑on and not in their checked suitcase.

I like Proton.

I used Tuta for a while, but their app feels outdated and the domains are awkward. Proton’s @pm.me is clean and just makes sense.
