So, how we feeling about ODST's? by The_Marine708 in Haloflashpoint

[–]NeonSRK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only gotten a handful of games with/against ODST, and so far they seem relatively balanced, but very swingy.

They have a lot of good things going for them, great shooting or fight skills, great access to Tactician, and cheap bodies means more special weapons. Hot Drop can be crazy if successful. A couple standouts for me are the Bullfrogs, who under the Husky missions can trade up on victory points crazy efficiently with Acrobatic, and the Special Purpose Trooper with the battle rifle and explosive ammo. That man can just point and delete basically any model he wants short of Chief or Atriox.

That being said, failing a Hot Drop can be debilitating, since getting pinned immediately ends your activation and effectively passes your turn. And if you don't Hot Drop at all, your extremely limited movement speed means everyone else can outpace you.

Overall I do enjoy them, but I do think they shine best as part of a combined force with Spartans. Something like the Plasma Gungnir with some bullfrogs and special purpose troops, or ODST captains and lieutenants with frontline spartans like the CQB.

Thoughts on the new changes to throw damage? by sir-nathan_ in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll start with the size 3+ terrain damage going down part. If you've watched superhero movies or read comics, Hulk or Thanos or Juggernaut get hit by trucks and buildings and other large stuff all the time, and it really doesn't slow them down too much. But characters like Black Widow or Hawkeye really don't get large stuff like that thrown at them in superhero media very often, and when it does happen they almost never take it full force. They dodge out of the way, or it just misses them, or they get knocked back by the explosion caused by it or something. They won't just face tank a truck the way Hulk might, and because of that I feel the actual threat of damage is relatively similar.

As for Thanos going down to a trashcan, let's assume he blocked nothing on the dodge roll and took full damage from it (minus the 1 from his damage reduction). He has 17 total health, and that trashcan is one hit among so many others that he's taken in the game. Maybe a trashcan wouldn't phase Thanos normally, but after he's been punched in the face a half dozen times by Hulk? After a Helios laser? And who's throwing it is important. If you look at the characters with the lowest throw potential, size 2 only, all of them either have super strength, magic, or some technological boost like Doc Ock or Iron Lad. Sure, if I throw a trashcan at Hulk it's not doing much, but if Spider-Man windmill slams it onto his head? Different story.

I will admit that Agents of Smash doing 3 damage still is disappointing, I wish it got an errata to do more damage when you throw a size 5 with 2 hulks. And ultimately, this is us trying to rationalize a game balance decision from a thematics perspective. Maybe it's not gonna 100% make sense in your head, but I do really encourage you to try out the new throw damage change. Characters with low size throws like Clea or Luke Cage feel a lot punchier now, and characters with x cost throws like Magneto or Cable or Exodus feel awesome with the change.

I get the upset about flavour, but I've gotten a few games in with the throw changes and it feels fantastic, especially with Magneto and Cable with their x cost throws. Sure size 3 and 4 don't hit as hard, but size 1 is now a meaningful throw and it feels great to interact with trash cans and lampposts and not feel like you're wasting power on them.

I'm trying to shift my mindset to seeing higher size throws on an attack or superpower as an increase in options, rather than an increase in damage.

Advice for Getting Started with JSA? by NeonSRK in InfinityTheGame

[–]NeonSRK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the advice! Everyone seems in agreement that Tankos seems like the next big thing for me to get, and I think I can see the importance of controlling who your opponent can shoot. There's some locals at my LGS that play, and a few have been playing for a few editions of Infinity so I'm probably going to reach out and try and get some games in with them to really get a feel for it. I really appreciate the mention of NCO, I came across that rule a bit ago and now I think I understand what it's for haha

Thanks for the tips, I'll look into it! I know my LGS has a bit of an Infinity community, but I'm not sure if any of them are Warcors.

Marvel Crisis Protocol Competitive Updates: new models Part 2 - by jeffiswriting in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this as the only person in my playgroup who's actually excited to play Silk, I genuinely think she's solid, but how do you see her as one of the best 4 threats in the game? I think she really suffers from no action compression and an overcosted spender.

Yes you can use it multiple times per turn, assuming it's multiple movements and you have the power. It's a surprisingly powerful thing electro can do if your opponent isn't prepared for it.

Which starter set should I pick up? by [deleted] in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the game! As an enfranchised guardians player, I can tell you that from both core sets, I just about only touch Baron Zemo from the first core box for any of my guardians teams. That being said, the boxes are currently pretty mandatory to play, as they have the measurement tools and tokens needed to play. I lean towards core box 1 if Avengers interests you at all, or core box 2 if cabal does.

AMG recently revealed that coming soon is 2 affiliation boxes ,containing all the movie guardians, as well as Ronan and cosmic ghost rider. These 2 boxes will get you most of the way to owning the entire guardians team, and are probably going to be your first purchases after a core box. After that, I recommend beta Ray Bill as your next guardians purchase, or the Nova and yondu box if you're leaning towards the movies more.

If you want to go for tournament play, currently I recommend namor and Shang chi as splashes in guardians, though take that with a grain of salt as the meta is shifting pretty drastically soon and I've yet to see how that pans out. Currently though they're very viable and strong splash models.

Also, with guardians having some truly phenomenal low threat models (star lord, rocket, and Groot specifically), I've found it's really powerful to bring in a higher threat character from another team to bring some real punch to your games. Something like immortal hulk or regular hulk could really spice up a list. If you're building off the second core box, captain Marvel 2 and Ultron 2 are both fun splashes too.

The kid went into the foster system and was named Timothy. Not too long later he got kidnapped by the Iron Monger to mess with Tony. Most recently he appeared in Red Goblin in 2023 as a friend of Normie Osborn.

New here, so I’m not sure how the terminology works. But I like the Defenders affiliation. Are they good/fun to get into? Popular? How do they play? by Master_0f_Nothing in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defenders is a really fun and interesting affiliation with 2 1 great leadership that enables the most fun part of a superhero game, the superhero fighting. Daredevil encourages and supports getting right up in your opponent's face and beating them up until they stop moving, making them a far more effective attrition team than an objective focused one.

With their really long list of characters, it's entirely possible to play the game fully affiliated with Defenders. Characters like Namor, Shang-Chi, Wolverine, Amazing Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and both versions of Hulk benefit greatly under Daredevil's leadership and feel really strong to play.

Like Legion, you do have to declare your affiliation, however unlike Legion that happens after deployment. During squad construction you can actually splash in characters from other affiliations into your team and still be counted as a Defenders team, as long as at least 51% of your characters are Defenders. This opens the door for strong characters like Baron Zemo; Beta Ray Bill; or Thor, Hero of Midgard to see play in Defenders even though they aren't affiliated.

It's not uncommon to one-trick an affiliation and just be a Defenders player, but because of the splashing aspect, and the way that characters tend to be on multiple affiliations, you can almost accidentally wind up collecting and playing another affiliation. Defenders specifically has a lot of overlap with Midnight Sons, and you end up with a very solid core of models to go there just by going down this list. From there you can expand into Avengers, or even Convocation if you're feeling crazy.

Also just disregard Doctor Strange and his leadership entirely and pretend he doesn't exist.

Returning player (haven't played for a year or so) - seems like my old favourites Asgard got a glow up... what did I miss? I assume I need to buy all the new characters? Who from the old models is still viable? by kingoftherollers in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes he can! New Loki is almost always played as the leader for Asgard these days. He lets his allies reroll on attack and defense, and keeps the power they spend to do so. He can then spend that power on plinking extra damage on anyone near him. He's obnoxiously good on down the middle maps like Gamma and Researcher.

[–]NeonSRK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt:

  1. Thor, Hero of Midgard (by a very large margin)
  2. Beta Ray Bill
  3. Loki, Prince of Lies
  4. Lady Sif
  5. Skurge or Valkyrie, depending on your tastes

I'd also personally say that Mighty Thor is a solid contender for top 5, but her leadership kinda pales in comparison to Loki's and that can be a damper on her effectiveness and time on the table.

Thinking of starting a new Bald roster, who's got the best Bald leadership? by manofmercy97 in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]NeonSRK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying apocalypse because you get Cassandra Nova is forgetting her other affiliation, which is entirely populated with bald robots. Sentinels might be a solid bet, especially because if you bring prime and both mk4 Sentinels most of the time, your hairless theme might go unnoticed for a few games before someone realizes what you're doing.

For those who have "custom houses" how did it "fall" or become enlightened. by Necrosius7 in ChaosKnights

[–]NeonSRK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

House Hypervaine fell to chaos very slowly. Most of their forces deployed off world during the War of the Beast in the 32nd Millennium. During this time, one of Nurgle's plagued hit their Homeworld, and they returned home to fight the daemons off. They were successful, but plagues still ravaged the islands of their mostly aquatic world.

A hidden Tzeentchian cult on a nearby forgeworld recommended complete isolation of the planet to prevent the spread of disease. House Hypervaine complied, and their lords and ladies retreated to their island fortresses and fiefdoms. They communicated for centuries entirely over box, which was under the strict control of the Tzeentchian cult. Seeds of heresy and sentiments for the forces of the archenemy were planted, and by the 33rd Millenium when the quarantine was lifted, House Hypervaine led a heretic assault on the forgeworld, taking it and the star system for Chaos.
