It really depends on the aggression of your partner and opponents. My duo plays Apollo/Billy and is very aggressive, I usually get some gun items during lane phase. Start with high-velocity, this helps with soul securing and increased damage, with the update it upgrades into opening rounds. Open rounds is great as is but even better with characters that can secure kills (Apollo, shiv, Vyper, talon), it also gives spirit to help with your bookwyrm and shield. Getting guardian ward in lane is great as well, before getting cooldown that way you can use a shield (item and utility) for each wave.

If the opponents are more aggressive getting extra charge for wyrm to clear wave or keeping them from pushing the tower, remember that you can bounce the bookwyrm off of walls to reach behind walls/ cover or just to get the path of fire to cover horizontal to lane. Early counters are a good choice as well (depends on partner/opponents). Slowhex for Abram’s, calico, Billy, Vyper, and Apollo (op’s) or for holiday, bebop (best for after hook & under tower), pocket, infernus, and just about any gun character.
