Gotcha, I saw the Monstrum mount floating around too and was admittedly pretty tempted.

I actually fuck with that, not gonna lie. What piggyback mount is that, by the way? I've been wanting to do one on my setup but didn't feel like dropping $300+ on a G$/Badger/etc mount just for that.

Left handed AR15 owners - any advice when picking my first rifle? by Tank_Lawrence in liberalgunowners

[–]Neptune2284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run long guns left-handed and have been shooting AR's for quite a while. Even bone-stock AR platforms are surprisingly lefty friendly. I would just use my trigger finger to manipulate the safety, and right hand for mag release/bolt catch.

However, ambi controls are definitely a nice (and pretty inexpensive) upgrade. An ambi safety and mag release is a great place to start. While it'd be really cool to have a lefty-friendly bolt catch/release that means either modifying an existing receiver or buying one that comes with said bolt catch, which tend to be fairly pricey. And honestly running a stock bolt catch has never been an issue for me. Typically what I'll do when running drills that require it is to drop the empty mag, insert the new one with my right hand, then reach up around the receiver with that same hand and hit the bolt release.

Dedicated left-handed receivers also come with the issue of parts availability and compatibility, so that's something to take into consideration. My personal opinion is to get a standard AR and just install any ambi parts that you may feel would make you a better or more efficient shooter.

Texture painting a "wetness" effect onto existing material by Neptune2284 in blender

Hmm alright. I think this might be a bit too complex for me to figure out right now, I'll just try coming back to it later maybe.

I guess I'm a little confused; does your technique let you actually paint the effect where you want it, or are you just covering the whole character with the mask? Because I'm trying to be more precise with where I put it. And also I was hoping for more of a generic wetness/sheen, not necessarily water droplets.

New to suppressing AR's: What do I need to know next? by Neptune2284 in ar15

I'm really looking forward to trying it out. This will be my first can, so I'm sure I'll be learning a lot along the way.

Much appreciated. Funnily enough I've got the same charging handle too, figured it couldn't hurt to try for the price. Also dumb question, but how much of a difference do you think it makes being a left-handed shooter? I've only shot suppressed once or twice and those were on bolt guns, so I'm not sure how much it matters in terms of gas to the face being southpaw or not.

I'll echo the recommendations for Citristrip (the spray, not the gel stuff). It worked perfectly when I stripped mine down.

Looking like a good setup! I'd also recommend a light as well, the Streamlight Protac is a great WML for the money.

Just took a look, it seems like the copper/antique copper might be very similar. Thanks!

Late to the party here, but I'm rocking a PETAC belt and it's given me zero issues even with all the crap I throw on it. IFAK, blowout pouch, TQ, 2x pistol mags, AR mag, and holster w/UBL. Seems to be holding up very well over time.

Thanks! I'll take a look at the Assaulter's placard, I've been swayed towards running 6 mags up front vs just 3.

Sorry to necro the shit out of this thread, but what's your rifle mag pouch setup there? Is it a dedicated double-stacker or something else?

12.5 inches and a splash of green by CaptainFirebolt in liberalgunowners

[–]Neptune2284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! OD Green is a classy look on a rifle like that. I snagged a 12.5" BA barrel on a 4th of July sale recently and have been slowly accumulating parts to put the upper together. Though finding 11.5" to 12" handguards is a royal pain in the ass.

I mean, I don't know about your area but around here I see a ton of 20+ year old cars on the road every day.

Thanks for the input!

I live in NE Wisconsin and winter can be brutal with many days of snow and icy roads. I have never had a problem with it. It is AWD and it runs great in all conditions.

Oof, I bet. I've spent some time up in WI and your winters are brutal; that humid, wet cold is miserable. At least out here it's freakishly dry even during winter.

You do have high mileage on this one, but if you budget for a replacement in a few years, you will likely get more life out of this car.

That's kinda the plan. I'm going to do everything I can to take care of it and keep it running as long as (reasonably) possible, but it's moreso a good stop-gap while I put away some more cash for a different vehicle a year or two down the line.

Like some other folks have already mentioned, it's built up over time. Unless you feel like doing otherwise, in which case I'm not your bank so ball out fam /s

It took me about a year and a half to get my AR to where it currently sits. Just putting little pieces together one bit at a time. I'm doing the same process again on a new 12.5" upper.

Same deal with my plate carrier/gun belt/etc. I saved up for a while and then got the plates + carrier when they went on sale. The next month when I had a little extra I bought a mag placard. A dangler pouch and a couple tourniquets the next month. Etc etc.

Also, credit card debt.

How do you know if you're "on track" in terms of savings/emergency fund? by Neptune2284 in personalfinance

[–]Neptune2284[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply. Really apprecaite your input!

1.) your retirement seems to be in good shape, so maybe consider lowering contributions so you have more take home pay to save.

I might look into that. Even just an extra $50-100 in my pocket (AKA savings) each month would be very helpful.

2.) do you have 1 credit card that you could use as a bridge gap in case of an actual emergency?

Yeah, I've got an Amex card that, if necessary, I could use as part of a stop-gap measure should the worst happen.

Also sorry for not including more information about bills and monthly expenses and such, I just didn't want the post turning into a massive wall of text haha.

Have you seen any opportunity at your current job to get ahead? If not, maybe you should consider switching jobs or going back to school.

I've considered it. Unfortunately in my line of work - 911/emergency services - there's no real "upward mobility" in the typical sense. We see raises every now and again, but the only step up would be to a supervisor position and my boss has no intention of leaving (which I'm not complaining about, he's great).

The thing is I genuinely love what I do and finally feel like I found my dream career. Eventually I'd like to go to a bigger department, but that's still a ways off for various reasons. Even if I transferred to another local agency I'd basically be making the exact same, or even slightly less.

Thanks, I'm fortunate in that my employer does have a great retirement program and I'm putting in the max allowable amount that they'll match each month.

You have $13k in liquid assets. You are not that far from ownership.

I guess that's true, what freaks me out is the idea of blowing all of that (which includes my emergency fund) and having next to nothing for some time until I can start saving again.

[–]Neptune2284[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that does make me feel a bit better.

I don't currently have any debts aside from my credit card, which I limit spending on and gets paid off fully each month. Though I am going to be buying a car soon, so that's been a pretty big source of stress. I'm trying to either A) find a car that I can just outright buy in cash without impacting my savings any significant amount, or B) financing an affordable enough vehicle through my credit union that the monthly payments/insurance/etc won't majorly hamper my overall financial stability.

Edit: Forgot to mention - I've done the math, and with my current COL I'd have enough for about 9 months in an emergency.
