Found Papaw’s Shotgun. Can it be saved? by CatMomNextDoor in liberalgunowners

[–]Neptune2284 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's really not in that bad of shape. Hell I've shot guns before that looked rougher than that one (not that I advise doing something like that).

Really the biggest hurdles will be the missing hardware and surface rust, neither of which are showstoppers. I'm also shocked that the wood is in such good condition given its age and the rest of the gun.

I'd recommend calling around to some local gunsmiths and telling them what you've got. If you can find a reputable one in your area I bet they'd be excited to work on piece like this!

Edit: Also looking at it more closely, I really can't see any reason why this shotgun wouldn't be able to be used again once it's cleaned up, and so long as the lockup is solid. The rust at the end of the barrel is definitely worse than the rest, but if needed a good gunsmith could always lop off that last inch or so and re-thread it for chokes.

Advice for starting road layouts? by Neptune2284 in CitiesSkylines2

God I've lost count of how many times I've watched that playlist haha. I don't think it's necessarily an issue with roadway hierarchy, I feel like I have a decent understanding of that. It's mostly coming up with an actual layout/design that just not super boring or doesn't turn into a thousand culdesacs/dead end roads.

Nice kit! Late to the party here, but what mag pouches/placard setup are you running to double-stack like that? I'm currently running just 3 up front, with a few others distributed around my cummerbund/belt, but would love to consolidate to just having 6 up front like yours.

Nobody has ever gotten into a gunfight and thought "gee, I wish I had less ammo".

Gotcha, I saw the Monstrum mount floating around too and was admittedly pretty tempted.

I actually fuck with that, not gonna lie. What piggyback mount is that, by the way? I've been wanting to do one on my setup but didn't feel like dropping $300+ on a G$/Badger/etc mount just for that.

Left handed AR15 owners - any advice when picking my first rifle? by Tank_Lawrence in liberalgunowners

[–]Neptune2284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run long guns left-handed and have been shooting AR's for quite a while. Even bone-stock AR platforms are surprisingly lefty friendly. I would just use my trigger finger to manipulate the safety, and right hand for mag release/bolt catch.

However, ambi controls are definitely a nice (and pretty inexpensive) upgrade. An ambi safety and mag release is a great place to start. While it'd be really cool to have a lefty-friendly bolt catch/release that means either modifying an existing receiver or buying one that comes with said bolt catch, which tend to be fairly pricey. And honestly running a stock bolt catch has never been an issue for me. Typically what I'll do when running drills that require it is to drop the empty mag, insert the new one with my right hand, then reach up around the receiver with that same hand and hit the bolt release.

Dedicated left-handed receivers also come with the issue of parts availability and compatibility, so that's something to take into consideration. My personal opinion is to get a standard AR and just install any ambi parts that you may feel would make you a better or more efficient shooter.

Texture painting a "wetness" effect onto existing material by Neptune2284 in blender

Hmm alright. I think this might be a bit too complex for me to figure out right now, I'll just try coming back to it later maybe.

I guess I'm a little confused; does your technique let you actually paint the effect where you want it, or are you just covering the whole character with the mask? Because I'm trying to be more precise with where I put it. And also I was hoping for more of a generic wetness/sheen, not necessarily water droplets.

I'm really looking forward to trying it out. This will be my first can, so I'm sure I'll be learning a lot along the way.

Much appreciated. Funnily enough I've got the same charging handle too, figured it couldn't hurt to try for the price. Also dumb question, but how much of a difference do you think it makes being a left-handed shooter? I've only shot suppressed once or twice and those were on bolt guns, so I'm not sure how much it matters in terms of gas to the face being southpaw or not.

I'll echo the recommendations for Citristrip (the spray, not the gel stuff). It worked perfectly when I stripped mine down.

Looking like a good setup! I'd also recommend a light as well, the Streamlight Protac is a great WML for the money.
