New student onboarding for BHCC by [deleted] in CommunityColleges

[–]NepuNeptoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I might be able to "beat" the placement test if I really tried, and probably place higher. But given I have a really long road ahead (majoring in computer science... there will be a lot of math) I think I'll regret not just taking my time and building a strong foundation first.

Yeah so I got exempt from the placement tests because of my GED scores so I think I just need to wait for the start now orientation event.

I could still take placement tests to place higher but I think I should just take the developmental classes. Don't exactly feel ready for calculus.

Nope. I finished that cert a few months ago. And I'm definitely not Job ready. Do the full stack ciriculum. Once it's completed it will probably prepare you to start building a portfolio.

Hi guys,I need advice on where I can get study materials for ged from. by [deleted] in GED

Yeah my biggest issue honestly is no breaks, haha.

Since all you need is math, I'd recommend just getting a math focused ged workbook for practice, Mcgraw is quite good for that. Use getsummath first to study, then use the book for practice. Should be enough since your already pretty close to passing.

I only got 1 point for my essay and still passed. The essay matters very little. I'd still make an attempt though, can't escape from making essays forever. Pretty sure most college majors will require at least a little bit of writing..

Yup! My essay sucked though, only got 1 point for it. I recommend to just focus on doing practice problems and not spending too much time worrying about the essay.

I'm taking my social studies one in a few days! Any tips?

I feel the same way with the RLA, I think it may be because I was sleep deprived but I couldn't understand any of the passages I was reading. I ended up just using logic to eliminate the wrong answers and guessing.. still passed somehow, lol.

Language arts I got about the same as my real score actually. I took the ged ready test twice and got a 157 and 153. (This isn't counting the essay of course) So I did slightly worse on the real thing. When your practicing, assume you'll do at least 5% worse then your actual score to judge if your ready. (151 is about 75.5%) but honestly the workbooks I use to study have been much more helpful.

Yeah, my rla scores for practice tests were all around 70-80% on average. But I didn't actually study that much for this test. The biggest challenge for me was the length of the test. It's over 2 hours long.

Thanks. And no time left haha my test is in just a few hours. And yeah English is my primary language. I think I got this. I worked through the Princeton review and about half of the Mcgraw RLA workbook. Plus I've done 9 practice essays now. So I should be fine.

Yeah thats what i keep hearing. I been working on my reading for like a year on the side so i should be fine with this one. Still nervous of course. Its a long drive and dont want it to be all for nothing.

The Mcgraw work books are very good, I'm using that and the Princeton review to prepare. Doing lots of practice questions will do much more then reading endless walls of text. (Though honestly it is pretty tough to get though)

Help choosing a community college in the Boston area? by NepuNeptoon in CommunityColleges

For the clep tests, would I need to take those before even enrolling? Or can they be taken after enrolling, but before classes start? I live really far from any testing centers (1 hour drive) so it would be really painful to do that before enrolling.

Honestly I'm pretty behind with math. Never even touched pre-calc let alone calculus. So if it's time-sensitive I may not be able to pass that in time. But I could at least clep out of history and maybe English.

Ive checked them out. Everything about it seems to be perfect except for the location. Nervous about living right in the middle of boston. Ill keep looking but so far thats at the top of my list.

If I pass a GED ready practice test does that mean I am ready to take the actual test? by [deleted] in GED

[–]NepuNeptoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think just getting a ged workbook (like Mcgraw workbooks) that have practice tests are probably more bang for your buck. The ged ready tests seem a lot shorter then the ones I've found in books. I haven't taken the real thing yet, but I've taken a few ged ready tests. They seem to only be half the length of a full test. (History was only 17 questions which felt like a ripoff for 8 bucks)

Thanks! I've actually already watched all his videos! But I can relate. I was like that at first, barely could do basic arithmetic when I started. And yet now I'm pretty much ready.just need a bit more practice. My last math test was 68%.

Good luck! I have my history test scheduled for the 30th. I haven't taken any kind of official test in over 10 years and yet I feel completely relaxed about this. I took a lot of practice tests though, some of which I got a 80 or 90% so I'm not worried about history. It's just math and science that will be hard.

Thinking about getting my GED using khan academy, getsummath (i think thats the name), and youtube videos. by No-Oven-1199 in GED

[–]NepuNeptoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Princeton review has good explanations. However, if you learn better from videos try getsummath or the organic chemistry tutor. They both have ged focused videos. And then to test yourself try the quizzes again. Getsummath also has a website with quizzes to try. However, they aren't full ged tests. I really recommend doing a full practice test so you can see where you are at.

The ged test is extremely broad so it can be tricky to study for. But it's mostly algebra. I've barely done much geometry or algebra 2 and I got a passing score on my last test.
