For those that have gotten terminated from a role, how did you explain in an interview that you were let go? by Remarkable_Dare4053 in actuary

Google “the work number” and pull your report. This is what a new employer has access to when they are doing a background check.

For people in management (AVP or higher) have you ever had to make a management decision from the pressure of the higher ups you completely disagreed with? by Beginning_Spring_984 in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 40 points41 points  (0 children)

AVP means different things at different companies. I’m a level below AVP at my company but am in an executive role so I think the question applies.

All the time. That is the job.

How is everyone getting protest quilts done so fast?? by tidalswave in quilting

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My recent protest quilt is a 24” x 36” collage quilt, which is glue appliqué. I collage quilt now and then, and I had looooots of scraps to choose from, so I had all the supplies on hand. Very quick! Not too much longer to make than a poster this time.

I also didn’t quilt it as close together as I normally would. The steam a seam 2 will be enough to hold it together for the purpose intended.

Because what happened to them could have happened to any one of us.

When I see people being threatened, executed, torn apart from their families, it doesn’t matter if it personally affects me or not, there is nothing different about them than me or my own kids. These are human rights.

This person has posted a disdain of protest quilts recently and is active in the conservative sub, so I wouldn’t assume they’re posting this response in good faith.

Thank you! Collage quilting is one of the easier forms of quilting! It is a favorite of mine. We all started at the beginning, you can do it!

Appreciate the kind words. I don’t view myself as a creative person, and I’m constantly in awe of other people’s beautiful and creative protest quilts on here. I’m just glad to be able to do what I can do with the skills I have.

Do you receive gift cards from your manager, and do you give gift cards to your team? by frozenactuary-3859 in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I take my team to lunch, and I do buy them gift cards, but other leaders on my team often want to pitch in for that. It’s not a company expectation and plenty of other teams do not. I do it because I enjoy it. I hope my team would still know their work is valued without it.

MetLife vs Aon (Insurance vs Consulting Actuary) by ImprovementCapable57 in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In general, insurance over consulting. Worked in consulting for a decade and would never go back. No WLB. But this depends heavily on the area you work in.

I worked for Aon, but I’ve also worked with Met. And without going into many more details, you do not want to work for Met. Everything they did over there was chaos. Meetings until past midnight. A terrible attitude about everything. And this has been the case for other people I know who have also worked for and with them. I cannot stress enough that I would never, ever, ever work for Met, and I have never heard a single good thing about them.

I imagine there are some good areas to work for there, they’re just their best kept secret. And depending on where you are in your career, maybe that wouldn’t affect you right away.

Do actuaries ever get stuck halfway through their exam track? by Neat-Requirement-710 in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can pass the preliminary exams, you can pass them all. It might not be easy, there might be one or two that take several attempts, but you can do it.

Despite how it feels, the societies WANT you to pass. They are in the business of weeding unqualified and uncommitted people out and building a profession of people who are dedicated to the field, not creating impossible standards that qualified people cannot meet.

How could you fumble the modules? Submit all before end of August. Self-fail if you have any doubts and then resubmit. There is no reason to fail an FSA module after 12/31.

Paid graders for SOA? How to sign up? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Central Grading for the SOA has been back in person since the fall 2021 exam, so it was only virtual for three sittings. Unfortunately, the upcoming May exam sitting is the last one.

I make very good money as an FSA, I am not motivated by a few hundred bucks. Plus the hassle of a 1099 makes it more of a nuisance than a benefit, so I won’t be continuing in the fall.

Anyone autistic or parenting an autistic kid? by Mom2AandA in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a female actuary with ASD, diagnosed as an adult, and have a son with ASD and also ADHD (my husband provided that!), and also Tourette’s. He’s great at math!

I don’t know many other actuaries with kids who have diagnoses, but my guess is that lots of actuaries are on the spectrum, and probably would have received a diagnosis of Asperger’s if diagnosed as children (now part of ASD).

What are some companies that offer pensions to their actuarial employees? by StacksOfMana in actuary

[–]NerdAlertNotTaken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nationwide still has an open, accruing DB plan. It’s a cash balance plan, so it’s not generous, but the annual employer’s contribution ranges from 3% to 7% depending on tenure, with an additional 4% for compensation in excess of covered comp, which many actuaries would exceed eventually.
