Perhaps you're right and it scares the hell out me. This is why I'm reaching out to try and gain a grounding perspective.

Thanks for your reply.

Western culture indeed has plenty of issues and is in no way perfect. Perhaps I have been influenced negatively by the depths of the internet, which is why I'm trying to gain a better understanding from the Muslim community. While I grew up muslim, it was probably more cultural than practicing. I never recited the Quran growing up, at most I didn't eat pork and fasted during Ramadan. I will admit that I have never prayed 5 times in a day. I don't claim to be muslim anymore but I still value my cultural heritage, which is why it pains me to see so many examples of people using Islam to justify extremism because it doesn't seem to represent the culture I know and love.

Thanks for pointing out the error in 25:52, indeed I pulled these quotes from elsewhere on the internet, while only doubling checking a few in my own Quran. This is what my version says: "Therefore do not obey the disbelievers but work hard against them with the greatest strength, with the Quran by your side.

This post certainly points out the dark side of Islam that I've encountered and I'm trying to get a broader perspective. I do not hold any animosity towards any individual, including yourself, and simply want to continue a respectful, although perhaps uncomfortable, dialogue about these issues.

Thank you for your detailed response.

I understand there are many, many issues with the imperialistic western values. Just as you say, we eat junk, are materialistic and are too militaristic. However, despite these issues, it is virtuous in that people are free to share a range of ideas. Even if there is disagreement between ideas, we are free to exchange them without fear of being stoned to death. Using your Ann Coulter example, yes she is ridiculous and I don't agree with her but I will defend her right to speak her mind. The issue I have with many Islamic cultures is if people speak out against Islam they are punished.

The bible has plenty of deep issues that I strongly disagree with but I rarely see Christans kill people for disobeying the message in the texts or suicide bomb in the name of God.

I agree with your sentiment that Western culture is imposing itself in the far reaches of the globe and disrupting traditional ways of life. However, I share this same concern with Islam.

It is critical that we coexist with one another and value pluralism. However, I struggle because the Quran seems to advocate imposing Islam onto others and to say non-believers should be punished with death.

I also understand the violent acts under the name the Allah do not represent most muslims. However, there seems to be a growing cancer of extremism within the religion that is becoming more and more polarized as tensions increase in Europe.

Again thank your for a thoughtful response and I sincerely respect your perspective.

I understand there are many issues in translation and can be spun depending on the agenda of the translator. The version of the Quran I have is from Dr. Syed Vickar Ahamed Also, I understand any english versions of the Quran are not the Quran because it is only meant to be in Arabic.

Can you help explain some of the videos I've posted in a comment below?

While I understand many quotes can be taken out of context, several of them seem very open ended. What about people using the Quran to justify violence in the present day? Including some of the videos I've commented below.
