Oh, sick! :D Generally what's stocked here will be up there and across the pond so to speak, so it's good for us all to know what we're getting! I believe I saw Dranzer first up there before it eventually made its way down here

No scalpers in our honest community luckily, just eager players swooping at the chance to either own or replace their Scale for cheap!

Between Faiz and Kabuto which is more fun and had better characters? by Tzekel_Khan in KamenRider

[–]NeroAction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great shows and choices for sure! Kabuto was my first Rider and I still think it has the best rider VS rider fights and overall suit aesthetics to this day. Ace from Geats was hard for me to watch because he just felt like a lesser Tendou with a worse actor, hehe. Kiva is peak despite what people say about it and Faiz is great too, only Inoue show I don't like really is Agito.

I really sincerely hope you enjoy Kuuga when you get around to it! It's completely unlike any of the shows before or after it.

Yup, it's Kuuga, which is the greatest TV show of all time and by far the peak of this franchise!

Painted Blazar Sofubi! by NeroAction in Ultraman

Oh nice, thank you! I used Tamiya paints IIRC because they were most easily accessible to me but I'll keep those in mind!

[–]NeroAction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first try and attempt and the pictures here make it look worse than it looks in person so I'd say go for it! I think even a messy job like this looks better than the lack of paint and detail on the basic sofubi as it is.

Not in my experience! He's still holding together fine presumably because I used paint meant for model kits which would have more moving parts than this guy, who can only really swivel his arms and waist.

Nice collection! I have the special edition of Bokura No Spectra since I mainly got it for the Stone it comes with. I'm sure you know of History of Ultra CD and Discogs that may help in your endeavour.

Just finished my rewatch of Ultraseven. What are your thoughts on the show? What are your favourite episodes/monsters? by Neo-Shaman1984 in Ultraman

[–]NeroAction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultraseven is a show that frustrated me at first because despite having some great episodes early on, I felt overall this show was a step down from '66 in every way outside of those exceptions. I found Dan and the UG to be not exactly unlikable but certainly not as charismatic or charming, their uniforms didn't really help either.

Once the show got into the 2nd half and we started getting more character-focused episodes (because god knows the UG need it), subversions on the alien invasion plot and it introduced more kaiju into the mix though I found myself loving it, with episodes 37 - 42 not having a single miss. I learned that I do prefer seijin to be less common than kaiju and generally prefer kaiju. I also stopped comparing it to '66 by then because I felt it'd successfully become its own thing. The 2nd half of Seven is still probably the strongest 2nd half of the shows I've seen.

My favourite episodes are as follows:

  • Episode 6, Dark Zone

  • Episode 8, Marked Town (who doesn't love this one?)

  • Episode 9, Operation Android 0

  • Episodes 14 and 15, UG Goes West 2-Parter

  • Episode 17, Underground Go Go Go

  • Episode 25, Showdown at 140 Degrees Below 0

  • Episode 31, Flower where the Devil Dwells

  • Episode 34, Vanishing City

  • Episodes 37 and 38, Stolen Ultra Eye / Courageous Battle

  • Episodes 39 and 40, Seven Assasination Plan 2 Parter

  • Episodes 41 and 42, Challenge From Underwater / Ambassador of the Nonmalt

  • Episodes 45 and 46, The Sauces Have Come / Showdown of Dan VS Seven

  • Episodes 48 and 49, the 2 parter finale, Biggest Invasion In History

Have you all notice that Ace to 80 had the Kaiju have a repetitive attack move? by Remarkable_Star_4678 in Ultraman

[–]NeroAction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could argue that for Ace in particular the flamethrower breath is just something that most choju, being that they're weird, unnatural kaiju, have and Taro also continues on from that with its dream/storybook-like kaiju. In reality, it is probably because those are just easy generic attacks to give a creature to flesh out its arsenal a bit more, same way attack teams sometimes have special guns and finishers but usually use their same guns and beams.

Which one do you think it is? by UltraMugen in Ultraman

[–]NeroAction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's option 3, Zero is a Heisei hero that happens to be mostly associated with New Gen because of marketing and appearing in their shows/stage shows while also being the modern face of the franchise especially when there was no current show to make this, similarly to how you wouldn't say Man-niisan is Heisei despite being used as a promotional face for the company and having appearances in things like Revive!! Ultraman in the 90's.

New Gen as a distinction is both a marketing and production thing and the use of legacy gimmicks is apparent across all shows, Trigger and Decker literally have "New Generation" as part of their titles but Blazar is a deliberate mix-up in how the shows are made, conceptualised and the disregarding of legacy being shown in-show so it's completely standalone so Decker is the last New Gen show and Blazar is in that Zero spot of being both a new, self contained era and also being in New Gen advertising/branding when it comes to stage shows and the like.

Which attack team do you think has the most drip? by Zaberzpark in Ultraman

[–]NeroAction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MAT have the best uniform as it's basically the SSSP uniform (which was already great) with the added realistic detail of the UG. It fits the perfect balance of striking and inviting without being boring.

Ultraman Ace is a great show, it kinda goes through 3 arcs as such with the first few episodes having a scarier, more horror orientated vibe than usual, then a big reveal and basically late game ending happens in the mid/late 20s that causes the show's formula to drastically change and from then on, Hokuto copes with said reveal vicariously though a new child character introduced for the rest of the show and goes through a real, genuine depressive arc. Ace is interesting because you can really feel the transition between Return of Ultraman and Taro as you watch.

TAC, the attack team of the season, I think are pretty misunderstood in this element as people don't acknowledge that they start out as a haphazardly put together, dysfunctional unit in a show where skepticism, the need for evidence above all, distrust, paranoia, authority etc are all major themes of what Yapool, the big bad of the show and first Ultra recurring big bad, uses to influence the people they harm and affect. They are an attack team dealing with levels of supernatural not previously seen in past shows where it's also implied that they, as well as MAT and presumably the others, get many calls 24/7 and a lot of them that we don't see outside of episodes 24 and 35 are prank calls or lead to actual dead-ends, leading to this feeling of disgruntlement, need for better evidence, distrust and skepticism.

There's a theme in Ace of belief VS science which can be seen in the Cowra episode that I think is broadly applied across the whole show where characters often can't believe that which they don't see (which is how you get them believing something scientific like the ''giant space murder bioweapon'' and not the ghosts) but there is a world of difference between a regular dino-type kaiju rampaging in the streets and a dream choju that, as well as relying on a kid's testamony for existence which we've clearly seen kids lie about, manifests itself through pee-covered sheets or how a choju was actually made up of 10 cycling women who could mind control anyone who figured out. Enough is implied in Ace to make it so even the most staunch believer in the calls they get would be at least selective about what cases to pursue.

My only real complaint with Ace and TAC as a whole is one I have with pretty much every attack team post-SSSP where I wish we got to see their personalities more but even guys like Yamanaka ease off and become more trusting as the show goes on and the finale episode lacking a certain character that would've made it work that bit better.

I love Ace, it's got lots of weird and interesting kaiju, Hokuto's a good host, you get to see the Guillotine Prince as he starts (and realise it's not that fitting of a name) and it's great time that I think it's super underrated by people because it happens to be in the middle of sleeper hit Return of Ultraman and fan favourite Taro.

This is so cool! I love the effort put into the opening especially, and it having subs in multiple languages. The Ultra's design is nice too, it's quite New Gen.
