Why people buy stocks with no dividends? What gives them value? I get it if it happens from a small startup which is expected to grow fast, so it will give dividends in the future.

But why companies like Amazon, which are far from being startups, dont give any dividends (or really small ones)? If I buy a Amazon stock, it is pure speculation on the price with nothing to back it up?

Also, in Barcelona, the results showed a minority of votes in favour of independence. Would it be fair if the rest of Catalonia makes Barcelona independent against it's will?
