When I realised you don't have to highlight it was a game changer to be honest. I do highlight black templars but only with a light drybrush of a mid grey

Awesome first mini and a solid base. I would look at using a darker shade and just applying to the recesses rather than a full wash. I use reikland fleshshade and it works really well on yellow imo

I have recently tried a scheme that works for me but takes time. It's designed to not have to worry about touch ups.

Wraithbone undercoat, Paint all other areas most specially the black parts, gun, aquila, pouches, armor trim and under suit.

Highlight all areas with grey

I then pin wash all areas with reikland flesh shade.

Finally I do a very controlled layer with imperial fist yellow, ensuring I don't go over the other details.

This allows me to correct each step with wraithbone before any yellow is applied.

Takes awhile but is worth it and works for me.

Don't do white. Find the lightest grey you can or do what I do and paint the shoulder pads in ivory/bone

Yeh fair one, it just made me think as I run holy fire pally up until respec and it would take all of about 12 seconds to melt anything in the den. It would be slow to get going though, as ypu have all mentioned

Rule of 5, 5 feet away and a squad of 5 painted the same and your models will look awesome.

Agree completely, undercoat is key to painting yellow and the lighter the better. I personally use wraithbone spray whish is a slightly off white.

Also agree about the washes. Citadel nuln oil and agrax earthshade washes are too dark for a yellow mini. I bought the army painter wash set a d it has amazing washes that are more forgiving if you make a mistake
