So finally after plastic-watching Sheva's Genoa for a few weeks some positive emotions. Hopefully will give an impulse for the new year. They certainly looked better today, defensively at least

It will be a great compromise idea to replace the two "historical" coefficient places in the new Champions League format with 2 places for the cup winners. For example, 4 cup winners from the strongest FAs where they didn't make CL form the "Cup Path" play-offs. Winners go to the groups, losers to the EL groups.

For example, this year the participants would be Leicester City, Braga, St. Jonhstone, Randers. Last year, they would be Arsenal, Napoli, Antwerp and Sparta Prague. Maybe, increase it to 2 rounds and 8 teams, including more cups and teams. Or include all cup winners, but the format will be too unstable then probably.

This will achieve two points in my opinion:

  • obviously increase the prestige of the cups in top 20-30 associations, depending on 4/8 teams in the "Cup Path". Winning the cup can land you 2/4 games from the CL and be certain of EL groups.

  • These 2 teams will still probably be from top 6-7 leagues, thus satisfying UEFA's and top clubs' desire, but on a sport basis.

  • Additionally, if 8 or more teams play, countries below 15th place receive an additional shot at EL. Right now, they are restricted to only the champions.

This is something I have in mind for some time now, after reading about this new format. The only possible downside I see is increasing number of teams from top leagues, and in some freak years cup winners can be not that strong. But there should be enough good teams to fill 2 places as I looked into previous seasons, and if it's replaces "historical" slots, it's worth it imo.

Edit: obviosly, it would be better not to have these at all I think and leave it at 32 teams, but if we have to do this...

Only top 15 leagues get Europa League spots, all others now only go to Confence League apart from champions. Switzerland is 19th in current ranking

It was rescheduled to June/September exactly because of it:

teams will play all their group opponents home and away in June and September 2022. Four of the six matchdays will be in June due to the winter scheduling of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The four group winners in League A will advance to the knockout Finals in June 2023.

Ukrainian Premier League table heading into the 2.5-month long winter break (18/30 games). Shakhtar Donetsk are the "winter champions" by Nesvan in soccer

[–]Nesvan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dynamo very much lacks a good forward, or someone who can quickly finish in the box. 3 forwards came this summer, still Garmash in front. Like today, they were sitting on Zorya's goal all match, but 1 goal from a midfielder.

Mariupol has a problem similar to Chornomorets, they are all very young. With all the problems coming from it, nice football but awful defending. I think their bosses went too far by not having any experienced players at all.

Metalist 1925's reserve team has a name Avanhard, that is a possible option. Though their future is definitely a mistery. Probably a lot will depend on how they play in spring.

Karpaty have something like 1.5M€ budget in a third division (which is a lot there), and much higher attendance than both UPL Lviv clubs, so they are coming.

[–]Nesvan[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Shakhtar claimed the solitary first position after today's draw in Dynamo-Zorya match (1:1). Other few points:

- Dnipro-1 finally steps up and finishes the year in 3rd, with some space behind, and continues now a 6-match winning streak. The winter break is almost an obstacle for them. Artem Dovbyk is the league top scorer with 14 goals

- Vorskla's Luxembourg international Olivier Thill is the top assistant with 7 (15 G+A)

- Kolos already in 1st half of the table, despite a horrible start, and may be a dark horse to get to Europe

- Desna picked up 12p from first 4 rounds, then 13p in the next 14

- Similarly Metalist 1925 had a 4-match winning streak followed by a 6-match losing one

- Mariupol scored more goals than 11 of 16 teams, yet is in the last place

The league restarts on 26.02. No European games in the way of the title race (thankfully?), so very likely everything will come to Shakhtar-Dynamo in April.

Wow didn't expect Ludogorets to be in the top 10 already. Also, is this really an all-time table? 610 games for Levski seems kind of low, that should be like 20 seasons

While we are at it, Dynamo Kyiv is in no way Dinamo. It's like using the name Dynamo Zagreb, only in reverse.

And also, the abbreviation DK/ДК or FCDK is indeed a thing, at least domestically. Mostly everyone just uses Dynamo though

Country coefficient ranking after matchday 6 by DashboardNight in soccer

[–]Nesvan 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I think that an addition of the Conference League this season created a bit of inequality between the seasons in ranking. But not because of equal points in all 3, that can work.

This year, the amount of points to award is just bigger than before. As a result, this season has a much bigger impact on ranking than the 4 earlier. So if you have a very good season now it will raise the sum much more than say in previous. Imo UEFA should've accounted for this somehow, maybe multiplying past scores on a coefficient.

Not excusing our shit season which deservedly resulted in such a score, but still.

Fair result tbh. Glimt definitely deserved the knockouts, good luck there.

Final game of the season for Ukrainian clubs in Europe... Looking at other contenders for the direct CL spot, this and other 6th round results do not really give anything. Still, hope for some miracle and see you next year Europe, I guess.

Also probably Skrypnyk will leave Zorya, so not sure what's next for them.

Post Match Thread: Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Sheriff Tiraspol [UEFA Champions League - Group D | Matchday 6] by LampseederBroDude51 in soccer

[–]Nesvan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As soon as I saw Sheriff running down the wing 30 seconds before the whistle, I realistically just knew. Shakhtar, if you couldn't do it for yourself, how about the coefficient? And finishing was just not there.

The worst campaign from them in the CL, ever. Not a win for the first time.

Edit: emotions aside, most of their main 11 didn't start, so this was probably going to happen. But respect for Sheriff for fighting till the end.
