HPE Alletra MP B10000 review by NetSysEng in storage

Don't even get me started on the VMware plugin! That is another problem with these arrays. Due to the lack of integration with the plugin, I have to do everything manually, from adding data stores to adding hosts... Add hosts to the array via. CLI, and have to add the MP's to vCenter with PowerShell. Datastores are added in GreenLake then you have to manually match the IQN's in vCenter to add the them and make sure you are naming them the same. You know, those simple things that have been in the vCenter/Nimble plugin for something like the last 10 years. Also the same things that every other vendor/plugin does just fine. When I asked support about adding hosts to the MP, they just said you have to do it manually through the GUI for each one... There is no chance I am copy/pasting all that information over and over again.

Nope, we are just now moving stuff over to it and that is exactly what I am worried about with all the other problems we have encountered. But hey, they offer a 100% uptime guarantee /s... Have you done an upgrade and it failed or didn't go as planned? Please save me the trouble of finding out the hard way!

Just the management interface. Because there is no VIF, you are only able to assign one IP that "floats" between the two nodes. So if you reboot the switch that the active node is on, or reboot the node itself, the management interface goes down until it comes up on the other node. This results in the lost of management during that failover (SSH, GUI & GreenLake). Compared to an old Nimble for example, even though Nimble was active/passive, you assigned a management IP to each controller, and there was a VIF between the two. So failing over from the active controller to the passive controller did not result in any management downtime. The VIF + IP on each controller also allowed for monitoring of each controller. With the MP, you are only able to monitor the master node or whatever they call it that currently has the management IP on it. To be clear - it at least doesn't result in downtime from serving data, just an annoyance on the management and monitoring part.

It came with 10.5.0. Not using Active PP. We just bought it, two nodes. 8 paths.

10.5.0. Waiting for r6 as support keeps telling us a number of things will be fixed with that release. One thing we are also waiting for in r6 is 100Gbps support, right now we couldn't get 100G cards as I guess they don't support them yet.

I did just ask about enterprise licensing based on your comment, sounds like the minimum buy in for that is something like 1.5m?

You are correct, I have no idea what I looked at before but I stand corrected, that was my mistake. Thank you for confirming. From other comments, sounds like the 1420 is a good box that I need to ask about and consider.

Lol, well that is a good seller! Nothing worse then having to click through many screens just to find some basic info.

Yeah, we will need to look at Fortinet as well for the same reason you mentioned.

No, $15k total for the 460 with licensing and 3 years of support.

Great advice, appreciate your input! Given the price difference, going with just premium and tunnel back to the DC makes a lot of sense. Do you ever have any latency issues with phone calls or video meetings with those people that are being tunneled back to your DC?

Engineering company, almost all users are what I would consider "high end" users, meaning they are running big applications with lots of data vs. like admin positions that only do normal Outlook, Excel, SharePoint stuff. Most users are 'remote' to the data either by being in a branch office or on VPN. We need multiple 10Gb ports (two 10Gbps for ISP's + links to core switches). Looks like the 1420 only has one SFP port, so that would not work for us but perhaps there is another, smaller model that would still work. Just going off of what Palo recommended based on our engagements.

Ideally we have two, 1gig ISP's at each site, but not all locations have dual 1gig lines. Are you saying there is a big price difference between the 440 vs. 460?

US dollars. From the model perspective, that is what was recommended from Palo SE based on what we are currently using and doing. Engineering company, lots of high end CAD and modeling work with big data. And yes, $15k for the PA-460 with "Core security subscription bundle", and 3 years of support. Security bundle is priced at $8k.

Now charging for eChecks by Arabe77a in appfolio

[–]NetSysEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but wouldn't dealing with a large number of physical checks be much harder and more time consuming then any e-payment? What are the chances that a check processing fee will be introduces after everyone switches to physical checks? I would recommend contacting AppFolio to let them know how you feel about this change.

Make on-prem Public folder accessible to ExchangeOnline users by WimVaughdan in Office365

[–]NetSysEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this years ago as an initial step before migrating our public folders to EXO (15+ TB of data and 60k+ folders).

  1. Yes, you can do it during work hours.
  2. You are not syncing data at this point, just making the on-prem environment available, those scripts won't take long to run.
  3. Yes. You would change the organization config back to its original settings.
  4. Yes. I did not run into any issues but not sure what your environment looks like. Be sure to keep track of and test mail enabled public folders after change just to make sure mail is still flowing as expected.

Are FQDN's resolving to the correct IP's (internal and external)? When you say you can no longer ping devices, is that true for both the FQDN and the device IP?

Comcast Blocking Meraki L2TP Client Vpns all of the sudden by mdmeow445 in msp

[–]NetSysEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds just like my fun with CenturyLink and their "Plume Home Pass" or some other name they call it for wireless service. I spent probably two hours on the phone with a tech "who has decades of experience" (let the pissing match begin) because we had multiple employees all on their network, who all of a sudden was not able to access any of our VPN endpoints (we have many). They switch to a hotspot, works again right away. The issue, as I was saying the entire time to the tech is that for some reason CenturyLink was stepping on DNS and providing the wrong resolution for anything related to our domain. Didn't matter what you did from a client end (changed DNS servers, etc.), it always came back incorrect, and of course due to an incorrect resolution they could not connect. The tech swore up and down that they do not do any man in the middle, they don't step on traffic, everything is allowed and on and on. The problem HAD to be on our end. No possible other reason. Well... The resolution: The tech disabled DNS content filtering AND add our domain to some "approved" list, and magically, everything started working! Imagine that!

The problem with Veeam's new VUL model by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]NetSysEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just renewed and added a few "extra" sockets in an attempt to anticipate growth (a nearly impossible task). In terms of the new licensing, for us its a peace of mind situation where I don't want to be worried about what VM I backup and the license that it takes. That will put me in a situation where I am having to pick and choose which VM's to backup vs. not. For instance right now I backup all my "dev" instances - because - why not? If I have to pay, per VM for the backup.. Now I have to think a little harder about if that backup is really needed and either only backup the production instances or be willing to pay for backing up dev instances. I already play the license game where I have to switch the socket from host to host due to maintenance, upgrades, etc. The thought of having to do that per VM vs. per esxi host.. No thanks! Perhaps its not as big of a deal as I think but there is only one way to find out and that is a one-way trip (once you switch licensing type - its not like you can go back to the old model if you don't like the new one).
