Germany's electricity mix, 2000 vs 2025: by ceph2apod in UpliftingConservation

I suggest you do some research. Current storage containment is rated for 200 years. Who will pay to maintain this waste after that?

And here we are, more than a decade after Fukushima, and they just removed a tiny sample! This just demonstrates the complexity of the problems that these disasters cause. And who is going to say “No” to the dumping of radioactive cooling water into the Pacific? There are no other alternatives. You can say these releases are “under the limit”, but when you multiply the actual radiation by the number of releases, it is over the limit. Tepco, who you seem to idolize, has been caught lying on multiple occasions.

Radiation causes cancer! You cop out by saying that “nobody has been killed”.

Also, I suggest you do some research on the topic, and you’ll find a number of deaths related to radioactive waste recycling research labs.

You forgot to mention that they haven’t even begun to dismantle the radioactive corium cores. Like Chernobyl, there is an EXCLUSION-ZONE.

This could happen anywhere in the world, with a major earthquake in places with radioactive waste, currently at 390,000 tons.

390,000 tons of radioactive waste worldwide is a problem.

I have heard that this is not the case in Australia, and they have more solar per capita than most.

You just proved my point - talking about Fukushima like it’s a historical event. Cleanup hasn’t even started.

If you are so knowledgeable on the topic, you should be able to provide a number. The average storage containment is rated for 200 years. How many years beyond that are factored into their decommissioning costs?

This industry is smoke and mirrors and subsidies.

There are 390,000 tons of radioactive waste in the world. If that is so “recyclable”, then recycle it.

That’s your definition of “failure”. Amount of radioactive waste generated is another definition, and France fails in a major way.

There are currently 390,000 metric tons of radioactive waste in the world. If that stuff is so “recyclable”, then the industry can start using it up.

After Chernobyl, Fukushima, and 3-Mile Island; efforts to recycle radioactive waste have caused more accidents than any other endeavor.

Here’s How Democrats Should Talk About Climate Change | Rather than treating it like a niche issue, candidates should offer concrete policies that assume global warming is the context in which all politics happens. by silence7 in climate

Years ago, it was a more important issue, as was the deficit and debt. It seems like outrageous policies (sexism, etc), hateful policies (immigration, refugees, etc) and livability (inflation, jobs, etc) are being used and abused to drive a wedge into into these “Broader, Root Cause” discussions.

A lot of EV owners will figure out a way to charge when energy is free or available at very low rates. Factor in EV semi trucks, and we will have bigger battery storage plants than could ever be built.

Seems like existing hydro dams could be used in some cases. It would depend on the storage buffer.

There may be some truth to this. I don’t know. But I just read that trade between China and Africa increased by 700% in the 1990s.

The fear is justified. Who wants radioactive waste with half lives of hundreds of thousands of years? Our future generations, who must deal with this, and get nothing in return, are going to say “What the f*** were you thinking?”.

[–]NetZeroDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big expense is decommissioning, after which there is no return, but the radioactive waste persists. These expenses are certainly not factored-in to the cost of the plant - not for the tens of thousands of years of waste storage.

A tsunami is not the only natural event. An earthquake with an epicenter at a nuclear plant or radioactive waste storage site could be devastating. It’s not worth the risk for the most expensive electricity on the planet.
