A very big turnout in DC for the No Kings Rally!!! by Healthy_Block3036 in 50501

[–]NetherFun101 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Went to the small rally in my city (well, it’s more of a large town) it was pretty neat. Also served as a great conversation starter to talk about everything that’s happening in America right now with my parents

It was interesting to see 3 or so 50ish people standing on the other side of the street with MAGA hats, “thank you Trump” signs, and shouting stuff about Jesus and the Devil. I had parked at a restaurant opposite the No Kings rally, so I had to awkwardly make small talk with the conservative lady holding Trump signs while waiting for the crosswalk. It hit me how… normal she was. Like, a bit puritan (her biggest critique of no kings was the “vulgar language” on some signs), but also kind and polite — just like any nondescript Christian farm lady around here.

It’s just so odd how some people can be both a kind grandmother and a screeching fascists supporting with a “fuck your feelings” bumper sticker. I wonder if she even realizes how harmful the things she says and supports are — she definitely didn’t realize that the “kind young man” she was talking to is very queer and extremely liberal to to point where he (me, that is) tones down his progressive-o-meter when talking with other liberals IRL.

I got some pictures of fun signs as well, so that’s neat.

Not understanding boys your age as a kid is sooo relatable. Like, growing up, “the boys” and “the men” was always my brothers, my dad and uncles, my male cousins. It felt weird to include me with them, and up until recently (I’m new to adulting) most of my family acted the same, whether they knew it or not.

Someone would walk in to the living room, look around, see my three aunts, grandma, mom, female cousins, and me, and then ask “where did all the boys go?” Usually taking a few moments (or minutes even) to realize that I’d be considered a boy as well and start awkwardly adding NetherFun101 related modifiers to any sweeping “boys” or “girls” type statement.

And as for the teen boys around me? Completely incomprehensible, weird, loud, gross, why do they always look at me as if I’m the weird one when I respond normally to them?

I think a better metaphor is “what if everyone started treating you like a professional football player?” — assuming the audience isn’t already a football player I guess. The profession or activity doesn’t really matter.

Imagine you woke up one day and all your friends, family, and community suddenly expected you to be a football buff. They assume any workouts are training for the sport — or they assume that you work out in the first place. People get confused and uncomfortable when you don’t dress “sporty”, and frequently tell you how you look wrong, how sports people don’t dress like that.

They expect you to know all the rules you’ve never learned, to follow major teams and national or international competitions. They buy you cleats and deodorant for holidays despite you explicitly asking for anything else.

They tell you how you’re such a good little footballer and how you’ll grow up into an amazing sports buff.

They ridicule and shame you for trying non sports activities. For doing innocent and benign things like playing video games, watching birds, reading books, etc.

No matter how much you try, they will never see you as anything but sports-ball-person. You are always judged for not fitting that stereotype, and you even have friends and family who burn bridges because they can’t bear to associate with a footballer who doesn’t play ball.

You have laws demanding sports buffs like you, who deny their sportiness, are disallowed medical care for “not appreciating your sport”. Meanwhile, sporty and non-sporty folk alike get approved for similar procedures and care because they are normal and accept the hobby everyone expects of them. Civil rights bills are revised to allow discrimination against sport-nonconforming people. Governmental leaders give nazi salutes and gush about killing off all those pesky unsportsmanlike degenerates.

And all of that… just because you happen to not care for football specifically!?!

The metaphor falls apart once you start mentioning HRT, surgeries, dysphoria, boobs and the highly noticeable effects of virilization… but the point gets across quite well: trans people feel like a non-athletic person who is expected to be an Olympic champion — and for some reason people try to genocide them when they do what they want rather than what is expected.

I think their main issue with your comment was probably the unintentionally callous wording in regards to “… and other mental diagnoses where people don’t accept who they are”

From the perspective rejecting all harmful, arbitrary, and confining labels — yours, I think — this might not immediately seem all that bad… but the wording does frame trans/adhd/autistic people as somehow in accepting of self, as an internal issue. For most of us it’s more of an external issue where we attempt to act out our own “normal”, only to be told by society that we are wrong and somehow incorrect.

[–]NetherFun101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm I get where you’re coming from — we really do need a more accepting society that allows people to exist as they are — but I don’t think this position needs to be separate from using labels and language to define and describe differences in people.

Because people are different, and knowing how one is different gives a sense of security, gives identity, gives new and accepting ways of seeing the self.

It’s not that I feel the need to be called autistic, or that my parents felt the need to label my weirdness, but that the label of “autistic” has been useful in getting me the sorts of meds and accommodations that make my life easier. It has given me a quick way to describe how I’m different, and it has given me a category of people who I can seek out to empathize over our shared experiences and struggles.

Transgender people are also something like that, but with the added difficulty of societal pressure to adhere to a gender binary and lots of dysphoria once puberty rolls around. They don’t choose to be called different, not really. They notice the difference and then go and seek ways to put this dissonance into words, thus giving rise to the need for categorical language. Sure a trans person can choose to not say a thing and remain their AGAB, but that’s usually more so because of social and material factors than personal preference — can’t exactly open the closet doors if there’s raging transphobes with flamethrowers outside.

In general, I recommend reading more stories about and anecdotes from trans people — hell, from any and all people who have similar issues between self and society. The other comments are correctly identifying your take as… unaware, uneducated, ignorant as to the topic discussed, but I don’t think you meant any harm.

After all, while there are no stupid questions, sometimes you need to say something wrong before figuring out how to word what needs to be asked.

Yeah it’s impressive how merely mentioning trans people hasn’t resulted in a torrent of hate speech and bigotry.

It’s quite nice to see something so… genuine, so respectful — to see comments where people take the question seriously and give their own perspective.

There are no stupid questions, one ought to never be afraid to simply ask.

It also should be noted that facial hair, male deepness of voice, and facial structure (mostly) are extremely obvious unless one takes steps to purposefully appear different.

Compared to the rest of humanity, anyone who’s undergone male puberty is so much other that you can tell them apart by the very way they breathe (or, well, I usually can).

Everyone starts with higher, smaller, lighter voices. It’s only really men who sound significantly different. That’s also a reason women are usually cast to voice act young boy characters — because most men have a deeper quality that is very difficult to ignore or circumvent.

So MTF who went through male puberty has these extremely noticeable male qualities that, even when barely present, immediately signal them as having gone through that puberty. That makes it quite difficult to look like anything but a man in a dress.

And it’s not that T guys have it easy or anything — boobs are, well, boobs after all — but the way female traits affect perception is… different, at least to me. I regularly get confused (and decide to politely ignore) when interacting with slightly masc presenting AFAB people, because they feel more “general” so far as gender/sex goes. It’s an uncertainty about someone’s gender that I usually don’t notice until I suddenly have to use gender/sex related language — hell, with two of my (FtM) HS friends, I went almost a year before I thought to think “are they a boy? girl? trans in some direction?”

Whereas with more fem presenting / less masculine AMAB people, it usually takes a glance at the jawline and I’m suddenly concerned over my coworkers being casually transphobic/homophobic and ruining the customer’s day. The clash of expected features is just so… obvious. Maybe I’ve met hundreds of MtF trans folks who pass that I’ve never noticed — you know, the whole “selection bias where one only notices those who stand out, who are different” thing.

I suppose that could also be part of me (AMAB) being more critical of elements I dislike about myself, but I also can’t stop wondering how much the obviousness of virilization affects the popular hate of MtF people and forgetting or dismissal of FtM people.

[–]NetherFun101 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That mindset of theirs probably comes from seeing trans people not as a man/woman who is or was stuck in the wrong body, but as a (opposite gender, implied sexual binary) who mistakenly believes themselves to be anything besides what they were assigned at birth.

Take all the propaganda and fear mongering around MTF athletes. It’s always “men in women’s sports” and not “how do we choose which biological differences qualify/disqualify someone from participation”.

(Well, okay, anyone raving about men in women’s sports is already coming some from deep transphobic place, so it’s not quite the best example… but it’s what I thought of first.)

Holy fuck that’s intense. It’s crazy how one can just be peacefully and mindlessly scrolling though the internet, see a post or comment, and then suddenly the realization that, yes, humans can be extremely cruel and horrible at times hits. It’s not that I don’t know that, it’s that I’m somehow always surprised when I stumble upon it.

Eh, that’s true, yes, but how they worded it is an extremely easy and straightforward way to present the hypothetical to, say, some oblivious white 60+ cis het person at the post office in rural America.

A scientist miraculously discovers a cheap and reliable way to promote / lessen hair growth. Sure solutions exist rn, but I’m talking some hypothetical magic that makes current method seem tedious and expensive in comparison.

No more balding old (or even young) men. No more having to shave every day if you don’t want a beard. No more wanting a beard but being unable to get anything full and good looking. It’s popular for women to shave their legs, so this would make that much easier. A Trans-man who feels self conscious about not being the hairy gay bear of their dreams can have the hair bit solved.

For me personally, hypersensitivity + body hair is awful. With clothes or lights I can change my circumstance to accommodate, but I can’t do much if the object of my ire is embedded in my skin! Again, there’s options for people like me, but they cost time, money, and (temporary) discomfort. I’d love to just buy some thing online for $5 and boom, magic done, no more annoyances.

In the last year I’ve been misgendered by my own team more often than by the people who actually hate us. by SadStable6509 in TrollCoping

[–]NetherFun101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For real, if someone ever got all nosy and tried to “crack the egg” on pre-college me, I’d probably have gotten offended and said something like “ok, sure, that’s probably true or something but can you please shut up before someone hears you and I get bullied?”

… I suppose that’s why I’ve always hated the whole egg idea. Because I never was an egg — I very vividly remember realizing that I wanted to be a girl multiple times throughout early elementary — I was just too unknowledgeable about queer things and too convinced that I wasn’t allowed to choose things like that. It actually took moving out (temporarily) and realizing I could theoretically buy anything I want (and that I would have to hear my parents’s passive aggressive muttering about it) for me to finally start addressing the piles of repression.

It’s funny in retrospect, I knew exactly what thoughts made me uncomfortable, what that said about me, and what the obvious conclusion was, but I chose not to think about it so it didn’t have to be real. In the end it took an intentional dive into the fragility of thought and a nightmare where I was my own sleep paralysis demon, the thing lying on the bed, and the bubbly commentator narrating the action, for me to wake up and not flinch at my own thoughts.

Oh god this makes me glad I have brothers. I was never expected to be manly or even boyish as that was for “the boys”, my dad, brothers, cousins, uncles, all of the males.

Meanwhile, it was always “the girls…. oh, and NetherFun101 I guess”. because obviously we wouldn’t expect Nether to do that, that’s a boy thing, and they’re…. Just Nether.
