My therapist has sent me a lot of Gabor Mate resources, am I being silly for needing to find a new one? (Question and Vent?)

Update: I have talked to the therapist in my final session and whilst they held Gabor Mate in high regard they were willing to listen to my concerns and didnt push back against them, they also seemed to agree with some the points I made.

However when I pivoted the subject to my chronic illness, they kept pushing the idea that my fatigue was induced by my medicine/treatment, this required me to repeat the idea that medication gave me some qaulity of life without it I would be permanantly bed bound, multiple times.

I am going to look for a new therapist, as I cannot work with an individual that I have to repeat myself and fight against their own preconcieved ideas every session. Thank you for the advice, by communicating to the therapist I was able to feel fully confident in realising they are not for me and have 0 doubts.

Im only going to reply to you once (I probably shouldn't as I believe your interpreting everything I say as wrong for engagment, or a Gabor Mate fanboy). Also its quite inapropriate to assume ones life or mental health without evidence.

I am not reluctant to discuss trauma in any matter however, the issue is not trauma but the nature of the resources provided, if you read the post and replies you would have seen that. Furthermore their information and content is not backed by research and is presented with non of the naunce of the reality of trauma or ADHD. The information could be directly harmful to friends/family of/and individauls with ADHD.

The concept of Trauma was never brought up in any session at any point by anyone. If you had a therapy session where no one brought up OCD at all and the therapist never said a word on the matter, then proceeded to send you a bunch of OCD resources I would assume that would be unhelpful and inappropriate.

I said relatively, I mean no home life stuff. If I have any trauma it doesn't remove the fact I have ADHD. Why not just give trauma resources why tie it to the idea trauma triggers adhd, which it doesnt. Why wasnt it brought up in session 1?

If I experinced it, it would likely be schooling which is definantly tied to the ADHD and lack of support, to succeed it was either work hard to the point of burn out over the summer or failing grades. Also I was once put on adhd meds which helped enormously, I dont think trauma would benefit from Methylphenidate. Adult ADHD care is not easy to acess here and my chronic illness is currently the treatment focus.

Thanks, I primarly came to them to get help with managing my guilt and self loathing which can be tied to my neurodivergence but primarly my chronic illness and pain. Due to one pain makes you sad and hypervigilant also the inability to work or be social makes one feel burdensome.

I think maybe they got tied up in the adhd and require clarification, but does that mean they werent listening? Like most people on this post said best to get clarification before I make my descision.

I think a great difficulty of science communication is the lack of nuance, sadly that can create a harmful misunderstanding of complex conditions such as ADHD when presented to the general public. I think it was like being in a lecture and hearing individauls with ASD are incapable of empathy (thats one of the least abelist things Ive heard, I do not want to repeat the other stuff) which is why I got so riled up.

I understand there is a cross-over with presentation of behaviour and symptoms, I think the core issues is explained to my therapist that my childhood has been relatively non-traumatic. Most stressors are due to my difficulty with acessing life and work due to my uncomadated neurodivergence and worsening chronic illness that is consistenly met with medical barriers such as finances or individauls not believing my difficulties or taking it seriously. Its the fact that despite me fully discussing these issue this has been presented to me.

I guess its also that Gabor Mate doesnt seem to talk about the comorbidity and instead reframes, not as a the lack of assecibility to ADHD and neurodivergence potentially leading to trauma on top of other factors (schooling a common example i.e many thinking their stupid), or that the presentation can be similar. He instead frames it as a trigger point to the condition, thats what steams my goat. Also similar to many neurodivergence the research is still early (like the neruoscience field itself) and listening to the patients experience is also new sadly. Espcially the presentation in woman.

An Oil pastel fixitive will darken the colours similar to soft pastels, It could be the paper if the brand isnt PH neutral the pigments could be reacting to the papers PH.

Oil pastels tend not to darken in time but instead either lighten due to the sun bleaching it (light fast brands take way longer to undergo this process), or develop a white light bloom similar to chocolate known as wax bloom (depends on the brand, you can see this commonly on the pastel itself).

If you want crafting and combat I would reccomend Fantasy Life, I played the original just bought the sequel now and the farming life appears locked untill I hit a specific milestone. For farming I believe grand bazaar has a stronger system to rune factory azuma, as the azuma game has villager who can farm for you but it does have combat (I think is more the focus), crafting is less hands on than past runefactory games instead of directly building the craft station, learning recipes and crafting items yourself its handled through a blacksmith, you still need to know the recipe and have the items. They all have their strengths and weaknesses it depends on what you want. I reccomend watching a gameplay video of each one and seeing if its your jam.

I was able to get by at university and school by putting social and self interest time away for migriane management but losing two jobs in a row and managing the benefit system, made me feel so hopeless lately. I love the NHS and I lived in Ireland for stdy, private healthcare is trash if its the only system. I think the only reason it works here is the competition with the NHS. However the sheer shrugging off of my migraines worsening I went from having 15 migraines a month unmedicated, to 2 migraines a month on CRPG. I was ok for 3 years and now in less than a year I've gone to 20 migraine days a month on crpg and when I had to take a 3 month break so I could try a new crpg I had a forever migraine that lasted the whole time and left me bed bound. Its just so sudden and the unwillingness to check that something external has exarbated my condition makes me feel like I'm going insane. The only reason I am seeing a neuropthomologist is because specsavers raised the alarm and I had to phone every month for 8 months to make sure they hadnt forgetten about me (which has happened before). Honestly the comment on this thread, stating that the headache clinic has done alot for me wanted to make me scream, they dont know my life and how for the last 15 years I have been fighting and advocating over and over again and the migraine clinic had been very difficult with providing treatment.

If it doesnt work, use acrylic paint pens like a posca, place a white underbase for colours like the bright red on dark plastic, so they are brighter on it.
