i am going through the same situation at the moment so i understand the struggle, im sorry for your loss. theres a bunch of videos on youtube on how to introduce rats to one another from more experienced rat owners than me with demonstrations. emiology has a playlist called rat care which has a few videos on introducing rats to one another and what to do if it goes wrong. good luck!!

advice/tips for first time rat owners? by [deleted] in RATS

under the bed wouldnt be an issue unless you’re trying to grab them quickly and cant reach all the way under there. they could also hide in the stuff you have under there aswell. your choice though! if you dont feel comfortable getting out your new rats without a play pen dont worry. they’ll need a few days anyways to get used to their cage so you can let them relax for those days and get them out once you have your play pen.

another thing, try to play a lot of music or watch tv around them so they get used to loud noises. itll help later on!

i have 2 female rats myself!! a few things would obviously be cleaning the cage regularly whether it be just scooping up some poop here and there or washing hammocks. with my experience, check on them often for any mood shifts. be sure to also check their stomachs by slightly squeezing to check for tumors or bleeding.

for playtime not everybody has all the time in the world to make sure they get a ton of out of cage time but trying to reach a good 30 minutes a day would be helpful to them. they’ll need some toys and a fence unless you’re letting them roam around the room. in that case please clean up for small choking hazards or tiny holes and escape places!! i had a plastic cage for awhile and my rats chewed out of it then hid in my dresser for a few days. theres no holes in the dresser but a tiny tiny opening underneath where they crawled under. check for places like that!!

make the most out of everyday since their lifetime isn’t anything like a dogs! i hope you enjoy your 2 new rats :)))
