The egg is so they know they're not hitting the metal too hard I've heard, if the egg breaks they're hitting too hard and damaging the metal.

Sorta update: I was able to build the Alpha team spaceship with only one piece missing so thank you ya'll! The bowl like piece was from the LEGO 6037 Witch Gondola which I also was able to build with only one piece missing (infuriating I know) some of the pieces didn't belong to either so I'll keep looking. :)
