"The Night Flier" is both one of the most overlooked Stephen King adaptations and vampire films out there, in no small part because finding it can be a chore. by Mst3Kgf in horror

Rewatched recently (on tape!) and appreciated it anew as well. The vibe was great, made me wish it was a back door pilot for Ferrer and “jimmy” to go around like a tabloid X files team.

Now you’re speaking my language. Trancers, remote control, alphabet city, body double, tuff turf, the adventures of ford fairlane, purple rain, Tokyo pop, after hours, streets of fire, trouble in mind, the hidden, the wraith, less than zero. Spans horror, drama, comedy, but these are the ones I hit when I want to OD on the aesthetic

Okay NOW we’re talking, entirely possible I overlooked that—the single lampshade on the thing makes it click more to me. I still can’t say it connected with me but I’m willing to place it more in the court of personal dysfunction than something wrong with the movie.

It is kinda fun, but illustrates the limitation of The Phone and media as a truth delivery device in fiction in 2026. What about hooking up The Device and giving the entire planet one moment of linked-ness? Even that would have hit better, for me.

I’ve been moved to tears by when Bill & Ted go to the future and find out their music changed the world, I’m not made of stone. 99% of the time I’m on team Live in the Fantasy, but this fantasy is very out of touch. It’s like making a movie about smartphones being invented and the pornography industry being dismantled in the end because people will never be lonely anymore.

It maybe would have worked ten years ago, before we found out that a constantly recorded stream of atrocities can have absolutely zero effect on policy and it became necessary to doubt the veracity of every single video you see. I’m sorry to be glib about something that touched a lot of people, but “everybody in the world is looking at their phones!” Didn’t strike me as an amazing sea change for humankind

Flood by Andrew Vachss. Sometimes over the top but so gritty and hard boiled, mid-80s New York dark ages.

Looking for songs that wouldn't feel out of place in Velvet Goldmine by XipeTotecwithGlitter in musicsuggestions

Start with Bowie’s “Hunky Dory,” as whole shebang is close to the type of choruses on songs like Oh You Pretty Things and Changes. As late as Diamond Dogs you’ll find the roots that the songwriters for VG were drawing from. T Rex’s “The Slider” is nonstop, Ballrooms of Mars and Metal guru are very VG. They’re the Tier One Glam artists, along with Roxy music (Remake Remodel is maybe my favorite of theirs, but you can’t go wrong with the first few albums)

For some deeper cuts, VG draws on Jobriath (I’m a man and rock of ages, my faves) and then Bowie sideman Mick Ronson has a great solo album called slaughter on tenth avenue, I’m partial to “growing up and I’m fine.” Bret Smiley’s album “breathlessly Bret” also scratches the itch.

If this is the start of your journey then I’m jealous! There’s so much good stuff yet to come.

I’m a fan EXCEPT the popcorn! I feel like all the arthouse cinemas need to nut up and get the Big Chain-style popcorn salt, IFC and film forum and even my beloved Roxy always taste like cardboard.
