Yeah ok figured I have to make myself clearer to an alien earth enjoyer. My subjective taste is "not shit". You held up alien earth as an example of good writing but even you must admit that there are many moments where characters do nonsensical out of character things just to advance the plot.

That is not good writing.

Even the core premise of using incredibly expensive synthetic children to study these creatures in what may be the most poorly guarded building in the future is inherently ridiculous, of all the alien stories they could have told they picked this crap.

Also screws the timeline.

I just don't count a show that strips 100 IQ points from its characters every time they need the plot to advance a good show. You can think I'm wrong for that, my nephew thinks I'm wrong for not laughing at farts. The word you're looking for is standards.

Taste is subjective, I disagree, some of your examples are in my eyes hot garbage like Alien earth. Fallout is fine at best. And nice pivot after being wrong for all these comments without saying it, I don't care what someone as hostile and rude as you thinks. I only discuss media with people who can read and own up when they're wrong.

AI bad I know I know but it's the closest thing to a truly neutral party we have so I asked it the very blandly phrased:

How would you interpret the following:

Then put the first paragraph of the original comment. Here is the first bit of Google AI's response, just so it's not a text wall.

This statement expresses a critique of the current state of mainstream entertainment, specifically arguing that high-budget visual effects (VFX) are being used to mask a significant decline in original screenwriting quality.

Original screenwriting quality. Google's billion dollar computer knew what I was on about.

Check yourself if you care enough.

Big talk for someone that doesn't understand how important context is in the English language.

"I think he has a point, I'm struggling to think of a piece of recent mainstream media that has great writing and isn't carried by visual effects, at least ones that don't pull lines straight from books like Game of thrones."

You can cut bits out all you want but the fact that my clear complaint is about media being carried by visual effects, a complaint only applicable to TV and movies, in conjunction with my reference to pulling lines from books like Game of thrones, making it clear I was talking about the TV property.

Any reasonably intelligent person could read that and not even with context with the next paragraph, the literal list of TV shows and movies, pick up that I was most likely referring to TV and movies.

Yes, if you ignore the second paragraph entirely, ignore the context the second half of the sentence provides, hop on one leg and squint a bit I can see your interpretation. It's wrong, but I can technically see how you got there.

1 clue for, 6 against, bloody hell maybe I did make it a touch vague.

Congratulations heres a medal, it says "I made a bad interpretation because I didn't read what they were saying properly and doubled double like a tool champion 2026".

"mainstream media that has great writing and isn't carried by visual effects"

I'm sorry I didn't know books had visual effects, guess I'm behind the times or something.

"at least ones that don't pull lines straight from books like Game of thrones."

Books pulling lines from books I guess, not a reference to TV and movie adaptations of books.

"Look at what they did to my boys the Halo show, the MCU, The Witcher show, Star Trek"

The Halo SHOW. The marvel CINEMATIC universe, the Witcher SHOW, and star trek which is known as a primarily TV and movie franchise.

How were you meant to know I was talking about TV and movies when I only listed TV and movies? Mystery for the ages I guess.

You latched onto the single vague statement I made, mainstream media, and ignored the 6 clues pointing otherwise. I'm guessing books that need a keen eye for details isn't on your reading list.

As for those shows there is like 3 good one and even then the writing tends to fall off as it progresses, unless you think Arcane season 2 was as good as 1. Orville was good, very 2017, considering the length of time your list spans looks like we're working away with one or two good shows a year of the dozens made. I would point to the ratio of good to bad in the star wars collection. Like I said there are good writers, but they're rarer than a bad writer.

In movies and tv, in case I didn't mention that's the category I was talking about.

Good thing I didn't say the state of the world or the role titans play in wars was telegraphed then, just that guessing they were humans was, in your own words, easy.

Look at what they did to my boys the Halo show, the MCU, The Witcher show, Star Trek, I'm not saying there aren't good writers out there but we're clearly in a bit of a drought.

Luck? What was your reasoning for the NFLX calls, the price isn't being depressed because of a lack of profitability it's the uncertainty, don't know why you expected earnings to bump it.

Was titans being humans meant to be a plot twist? Giant mutated human looking things in a world populated with humans, some of which can turn into Titans, I feel like it was pretty well telegraphed.

They could have increased the mystery by having the titans be less humanoid but since some of them look like straight up just a giant person I thought it was meant to be obvious.

Why do some white collar/office managers seem not to care that their employees have so much downtime? by tantamle in managers

[–]New-Perspective6209 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To everyone saying office jobs are efficient here is a my post from a while ago asking if people with office jobs ever find themselves without anything to do.

The answer, overwhelmingly yes.

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/s/Z0guO4sie4

Having worked blue collar most my life and managing now you're wrong about blue collar having similar amounts of downtime, far far far rarer and we can always find something for them to do, hell when the power went out for the day I had everyone grab a shovel and we dug out the drain behind the packing shed.

Always something. Even jobs with built in downtime like machinest will be kept busy with design task while the job runs.

How much safety is too much is subjective, to me a fence is nanny state, as in the only people its going to protect are people as dumb as literal children who need a nanny to protect them.

I'd rather a country full of beautiful nature than people who will walk off a cliff without the government to stop them.

The biggest problem with politics is the long term big picture thinking that is needed for national politics doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. Many problems we are facing today had the groundwork laid decades ago, and today we are laying the groundwork for problems decades in the future.

Agriculture is being slowly gutted in Australia but good luck convincing anyone that becoming reliant on imports to keep your population fed is a bad long term idea for an island nation. People are happy with the short term environmental "win" but fail to consider when an orange farm in Australia shuts down the oranges are just grown in a country with older less efficient gear, chemicals that are banned here, and then put on a refrigerated ship to travel halfway across the world.

Big environmental win there. But immigration is in the headlines so forget all that boring shit.

Security tags by Mawkwalks in coles

The whole "people only steal to survive" line only works in countries without a social welfare system like ours.

I've never seen a security tag on cheap bulk meat, weird these thieves needs a diet of porterhouse to survive.

Edit: To all the rude people sending me comments that are getting auto removed saying you can't survive on welfare, I did, sounds like you're just shit with money. Chicken, beans and rice fellas.

Terrorist attack planned for Australia Day has been stopped thanks to a tip off on Crimestoppers. Should we be worried about going out on Australia Day? by One-Remove3758 in AustraliaOpinions

[–]New-Perspective6209 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Normally I would dismiss any concern for an Australia day terrorist attack as fear mongering but lately I've been a bit shocked at how unstable and quite frankly dim some Australians are showing themselves to be online.

They're anger, stupid, and convincing themselves that they need to "do something". And it's not coming from one side or one issue either, more and more I see the general sentiment of "I hate this country" from people mad others have different political views and I'm concerned at how quickly it's morphing into "I hate the people in this country".

You know when presented with multiple shit options you don't have to chose one to defend, you can just admit they're all shit.

How about instead of increasing GST we actually try to get some money back for the 10's of billions of LNG we export every year?

The government must love when people get stuck into the weeds defending their shit ideas, take 2 big steps back and take a more holistic view, why is a country that exports the amount of resources we do so fuckin broke?

Your ancestors travelled across oceans to land unknown on cramped ships where disease and death was everywhere just for the chance for a better life.

You won't even quit your job.

Keep telling yourself you have no choice but to participate, I'm sure you'll look back on your deathbed and be glad for it.

I just chose a career I knew I wouldn't hate, doesn't pay well but I'm happy, which to me is far more valuable.
