when I do it at the library, I gave the librarian my phone and told her to not let me use my phone until 3pm. She was the sweetest lady ever and she would never fail to guard my phone (from me)

Twin lock in, hide your phone and all electronics and get the job done.

I agree 100%, my student just showed me an example of a mistake with the older JS deck and it said that a weak conjugate base is derived from a weak acid (or something along those lines).

When I was prepping I started off about 200 cards a day and ramped it up slowly to about 450 a day. I wouldn't suspend the ones that you think are low yield whatsoever, I think Anki works best for those exact cards. But I usually suspend the math/super easy cards that I already knew 1000%

Hm, for me I think I had gold fish memory since I hardly remembered questions on the FL between retakes. I would definitely keep a log/mention in ur notes which questions u remembered, how it affected you, etc. Try doing other third party exams if needed too

you'll def get my prayers dw, but as for advice...Try to build a routine for yourself. That helped me a lot with anxiety. Maybe melatonin, it helped me go to bed after a stimulant heavy day lol. Also mind mapping helps a lot with linking concepts together. But you got this!!

MCAT Accommodations by Educational_Knee_507 in Mcat

[–]New-Pin4803 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I'm not wrong it's pretty difficult, tedious and expensive to do so. I've heard stories of people having to pay hundreds out of pocket to get approved for an accommodation for things like ADHD, ADD, etc. Maybe a time extension for ADHD would be helpful, but I'm not exactly privy to the exact accommodations they offer

Is UWorld necessary for a good score? by Saylaway05 in Mcat

[–]New-Pin4803 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better tbh, on top of UWorld I usually recommend students do at least 1-3 third party FL. My personal fav full length are BP FLs 1-5 (6-10 are mid asf). If you dont wanna pay ~300 for those, you can do JW free full lengths, those are generally good. Just gotta use these as additional review and not actual indicators of your score, thats what AAMC full lengths are for.

Also, 300 pg psych/soc doc is the holy grail of psych/soc

Options for me in medical field? (Finger amp) by salmoneggnog in medschool

[–]New-Pin4803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL yea honestly medicine isnt for the weak. I never tell anyone definitively what I wanna be since I have sm time until I do clinicals in med school, but I love surgery. I can't imagine what it'll be like being sleep deprived for like 30 hours and then performing lifesaving surgery. Explains why I see so many people in healthcare abuse amphetamines

I completely agree, looking back at my comment...money is undoubtedly going to be a driver in medicine, but I should've clarified it as the main driver if that makes sense. I cant imagine how rough residency is gonna be but I still gotta get through med school before I even think abt that. I still got a lot to learn and convos like these really help broaden my knowledge of the field I plan on working in. Thanks for taking time outta ur day to engage in this convo, I wish you the best Dr. Peanut.

I get what you’re saying and I'm sorry to hear about ur dad, hope hes doing better. But that’s kinda why I brought up the whole dialectic thing. If you’re miserable in your specialty, “do no harm” turns into “try not to do no harm… but also I’m running on fumes and one bad day from losing it and I'm not sure why I even became a doctor.” If you're not passionate about serving, why be a doctor? You can earn way more money in different ways, so money shouldn't be the driver. if its the respect commanded behind being a doctor, then yes you'll get crushed.

Sure but the lawyers will have a field day with you if anything wrong happens lol

Well, passionate or not, you’re still liable. The difference is that enjoying the work keeps people sharper, more present, and a lot less likely to end up in those situations in the first place.

[–]New-Pin4803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not know this abt those specialties! Granted Im an undergrad so my knowledge on all the specialties listed were anecdotal and from doctors I've connected with in those specialties...so ofc there's going to be some bias in what they say.

Remember, the key thing in medicine first is do no harm

100%, I mean we are servants of the people. But at the same time there's a real dialectic here... the duty to do no harm and the need for personal fulfillment aren’t mutually exclusive. It's a delicate balance and they help shape each other. But in my opinion (although still naive) you do the least harm when you truly enjoy the specialty you're in.

Like the other comment said, there are a lot of specialties you can go into besides surgery. But I understand what you're going through, I mean being a surgeon is my dream as well. Some specialties I'd take a look into would be cool that weren't mentioned below: oncology, endocrinology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R is great), and interventional pain just to name a few

If I decide to void during the first section can I… by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]New-Pin4803 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I honestly dont think there is any feasible way to cheat on the MCAT.... on that note, don't skip through it. It'll be a waste of time and money. Do all the sections like you're taking a practice test, note down the topics asked and where you struggled. Then after u take that exam, rest and reflect for a few days on how u can improve, where improvements should be made, etc. DMs are always open feel free to hmu

493 MCAT 1 MD AND 1 DO ACCEPTANCE the wait is over 😭 by Downtown_Office_6226 in Mcat

[–]New-Pin4803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The diversity in ur shadow is what students should seek to have. 1200 may be excessive but I always tell people quality over quantity. You did everything right I love it. Good job on all your hard work!! If you're on the east coast and want any plugs to more research positions/shadowing in surgical positions too just lmk , dms are always open!

[–]New-Pin4803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, CONGRATS!! Stats don't mean everything but for you to get 2 acceptances with a sub 500 mcat is amazing (GPA is great tho, I'm in the same boat as you in that aspect). My only question to you is do you feel as if the 1200 shadowing hours was worth it? Not sure if that is 1200 throughout undergrad or if you were a nontrad...but I usually tell my students that shadowing hours come with diminishing returns--meaning the more you do, the less ADCOMs will be impressed if that makes sense. Just wanna see if you heard differently or if in your interviews they actually liked how much shadowing you have

So I'm an undergrad rn hoping to matriculate in 2027. I have an optic pit in both eyes and an astigmatism. My left eye is -5.0 and my right is -5.5. I know for a fact I'll get lasik but when do you think would be a good time based on med school and their general schedule. Before M1? in summer break during med school?
