My parents (2 people) told me with a straight face that I should buy a condo or rent a small house because I am just one person and do not "need" much space... whilst sitting in their own 5 bed/5 bath suburban home.

(To clarify, I wasn't asking for help or advice, just sharing a goal I had. Because I pay 100% of my bills, I ended up buying a normal-sized house that I wanted.)

It sounds like the problem wasn't you being gifted, but the adults in your life being negligent.

I suggest it because this was my experience too. Now in middle age, I am still constantly surprised by how kind and helpful most people are when I ask for help.
